Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response addresses the task only minimally, which is reflected in the performance. Furthermore, the length requirement is NOT met. The student's response contains 193 words, falling 57 words short of the 250-word minimum (13 words copied from the task prompt were not counted). While the writer attempts to discuss both views regarding accepting or improving bad situations, the ideas remain highly limited, fragmented, and under-developed. For instance, sentences such as 'individuals to gain more better income such as unsatisfactory jobs' lack clear reasoning and fail to properly develop a position. To move to a higher level, the writer must ensure the word count requirement is met, present fully extended arguments, and maintain a clear, consistent position throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response shows some basic organisation with paragraph breaks attempted, but information and ideas are not arranged coherently overall. There is a lack of clear progression, and the logical flow is frequently disrupted by abrupt shifts in topic and repetitive sentence patterns. While basic cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand' and 'To conclude' are used, referencing is often unclear and mechanical, as seen in phrases like 'bad situation is better related to other income sources.' Progression stalls because sentences do not build logically upon one another. To improve, the writer needs to structure paragraphs around clear topic sentences, ensure smoother transitions between ideas, and use cohesive devices more accurately to guide the reader through a well-organised argument.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, employing a very narrow range of words that are frequently strained or misused. Phrases such as 'more better income' and 'tuff situation' demonstrate frequent lexical inaccuracies and non-standard word forms. Spelling mistakes, such as 'sourses', 'perfomance', and 'proft', further detract from the quality of the writing and occasionally impede communication. The writer relies heavily on direct repetition of prompt vocabulary like 'bad situation' and 'unsatisfactory job'. To achieve a higher score, the writer must expand their lexical range by incorporating less common vocabulary, improving word choice and collocation, and paying closer attention to standard spelling and word formation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, consisting mainly of simple sentences and faulty attempts at complex forms. Frequent errors are present across basic structures, including verb tense inconsistencies, missing or incorrect auxiliary verbs (e.g., 'many people not move'), and awkward clause structures lacking finite verbs (e.g., 'individuals to try better perfomance to give the related to business'). Punctuation and article usage are also weak throughout the text. These frequent errors can cause difficulty for the reader and sometimes distort the intended meaning. To progress, the writer needs to gain better control over basic sentence construction, ensure subject-verb agreement, and develop accurate control over simple and complex verb forms.
