IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people believe that it is best to accept a bad situation, such as an unsatisfactory job or shortage of money. Others argue that it is better to try and improve such situations.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some people believe that accepting difficult circumstances is the best way to deal with bad situations, whereas others argue that it is better to try and bring improvement to such situations. I personally believe that individuals should try to improve their circumstances irrespective of the situation. This essay will discuss both views in the following paragraphs.
To begin with, it can be better to continue working in an unfavourable situation, whether it is an unsatisfactory job or a financial crisis. This is because bad circumstances can give people encouragement and motivation to work harder and eventually overcome their problems. Moreover, such experiences can make individuals stronger and better prepared to deal with uncertainties in the future. For example, if an individual is working in an unfavourable environment, they may continue doing so to fulfil their basic needs at home. At the same time, they can learn how to deal with difficult circumstances and develop the skills needed to improve their situation.
n the other hand, it is better to try and bring improvements to such situations. This can possibly be achieved through proper planning, hard work and good mentorship. In addition to this, individuals can seek help from their seniors or experienced people to overcome difficulties and perform better. For example, if an individual is not working in a job that matches their interests, they can try to find other opportunities within the same organisation that are more suitable for them. Therefore, rather than simply accepting a bad situation, people can try to improve their circumstances.
In a nutshell, I personally believe that individuals should try their best to improve their circumstances rather than simply accepting them. Moreover, every problem has a solution, which can often be found through proper planning, hard work and determination.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on how to deal with bad situations and providing a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is uneven. While the first body paragraph attempts to explain why accepting a bad situation can be beneficial by suggesting it builds motivation and resilience, this idea is slightly paradoxical and under-developed, as enduring an unsatisfactory job is framed as a tool for personal growth rather than genuine acceptance. The second body paragraph explores the opposing view—improving the situation through planning and mentorship—with more practical relevance, such as seeking opportunities within an organization. A small portion of the text is drawn from the prompt, which is noted, but the overall task is appropriately addressed with a clear position maintained throughout, though deeper elaboration of the first view would lift the response further.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introduction to the body paragraphs and the final conclusion. Each paragraph has a discernible central topic, such as the arguments for acceptance in the second paragraph and the arguments for improvement in the third. Cohesive devices are employed, including transition markers like 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'In addition to this', though some referencing and mechanical connections occasionally feel somewhat formulaic. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate the introduction, the two main viewpoints, and the conclusion, fulfilling the criteria for a clear structure while pointing toward a more flexible use of cohesion at the next level.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully attempting less common items and phrases such as 'unfavourable environment', 'financial crisis', and 'proper planning'. There are some word-choice and collocation limitations, as seen in the phrase 'bring improvement to such situations' rather than the more natural 'make improvements' or 'improve such situations', and a minor typographical slip with 'n the other hand'. However, these errors do not impede communication. The vocabulary is generally functional and sufficient to convey the intended meanings, though incorporating more precise and sophisticated lexical chunks would elevate the writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over standard grammatical patterns and sentence structures. Examples of complex structures include conditional clauses such as 'if an individual is working in an unfavourable environment, they may continue doing so'. There are some errors in grammar, such as the missing initial letter in 'n the other hand', but overall, grammatical errors are infrequent and rarely impede communication. Punctuation is generally accurate, supporting the flow of the text. To reach a higher band, the writer would need to demonstrate a wider variety of complex structures with a higher frequency of entirely error-free sentences.
