IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people believe that it is best to accept a bad situation, such as an unsatisfactory job or shortage of money. Others argue that it is better to try and improve such situations.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
A few individuals believe that it is good to accept a bad phase, for instance a bad job or less money. While others contradict with this thinking and believe that a person should try and overcome such situations, i think that a person should always work hard and face any difficult situation that comes in their lives.
On the first hand, there are people who admit that any difficult part is the part of the life without even trying to resolve that problem. These kind of people don't take any risks and bold actions because they always worry about the results. For example, there are huge number of employees working in a toxic work environment or with a low salary. These individuals have made their lives according to the difficulty they are facing instead of taking any action due to the reason that they are not brave enough.
Meanwhile, a huge number of individuals believe on hard work and self improvement instead of relying on the destiny. These people are not afraid of the consequences but they are only fond of the efforts. For instance, a Indian banker Lucky Bhaskar who was a poor man in his early life even sometimes he had'nt have any money for food. Even though he did not accept it as his fate but worked hard in the finance sector which results him as a richest man of the country.
In conclusion, some people think any bad situation as part of their life while others think opposite to it. I believe that a person should always work hard and that he should be audacious enough to face any worse phase of their life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views—accepting a bad situation versus trying to improve it—and provides a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For instance, the view supporting acceptance is explained using general examples of toxic workplaces, while the counter-argument relies heavily on a specific narrative example of an Indian banker named Lucky Bhaskar. This specific reference adds a relevant illustration, but the overall development tends to rely on generalisations rather than fully extending every argument. The position remains clear throughout the essay, satisfying the core requirements for this level while leaving room for deeper conceptual exploration.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear, logical progression of ideas from the introduction through the body paragraphs to the conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, such as the two opposing views. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader, although some referencing and transitional phrases feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as the repeated use of 'These people' and 'For instance'. While the overall structure holds together effectively, the management of internal cohesive ties could be smoother and more varied to enhance the natural flow of the arguments throughout the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating main ideas with terms like 'toxic work environment,' 'self improvement,' and 'audacious.' There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, but these are occasionally undermined by inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'contradict with this thinking' instead of 'disagree with this perspective' or 'results him as a richest man' instead of 'resulted in him becoming the richest man.' Spelling and word-choice errors are present, including 'had'nt have,' but these do not seriously impede communication. Expanding precision and refining lexical collocation would elevate the response to a higher standard.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an ability to construct compound and multi-clause sentences, such as 'While others contradict with this thinking and believe that a person should try and overcome such situations...'. There are, however, several errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('an Indian banker'), awkward verb tense shifts ('had'nt have any money'), and minor prepositional inaccuracies. These errors occur across the text but rarely impede overall communication or obscure the writer's intended meaning, reflecting a reliable control of basic structures combined with developing, though occasionally faulty, complex attempts.
