Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Some people believe that accepting a difficult situation is the best chooce, while others think that people should make efforts to improve thri circumsentances. Both views have some advantages, but I believe that trying to improve a bad situation is gennrally better.

On the one hnad, accpeting a difficult situation can sometimes be practical. For example, if a person has an unsatisfactory job, they may continue working there because they need money to support their family. Similarly, people who have financial problem may not have many chocies in the short term. Accepting reality can reduce the unnecessary stress and help people focus on managing their current situation. In some cases, problem may also be temporary, so accpeting them patiently can be sensible.

On the other hand, trying to improve a difficult situation can provide better opportunities in the future. A person who dislike their job could learn new skills, gain qualifications or search for another position. In the same way, someone suffering from a shortage of money could reduce unnecessary expenses or find additional work. Although these actions may require time nad effort, they can gradually lead to a better quality of life. For instance, a large number of people improve their financial situation by developing professional skills and finding better-paid employment.

In my prespective, people should not simply accept a bad situation if they have realistic opportunities to change it. However, they should also understand that some problems cannot be sloved immediately. Therefore, accpeting a situation temporarily while making a practical plan to improve it is the most effective approach.

In conclusion, although accepting a difficult stuation can sometimes can be necessary in the short term, I bleieve that trying to improve the situation is a better choice. People should take practical steps to overcome problems and create better opportunities for their future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses both views and gives a clear, consistent opinion: improving a difficult situation is generally preferable, while temporary acceptance can be practical. The examples about staying in a job to support a family, gaining qualifications, and finding additional work are relevant and help extend the main points. The conclusion also reinforces the position and offers a balanced practical approach. To develop the discussion further, explain the consequences of the examples more specifically—for instance, how someone can judge whether a job change or extra work is realistic. Some claims, such as that many people improve their finances through better-paid employment, remain general. Overall, the task is fully addressed, with ideas supported but not always explored in depth or precision.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear progression: the introduction presents both positions, separate body paragraphs discuss each view, and the conclusion restates the writer’s judgement. Paragraphing is appropriate, and signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” make the structure easy to follow. Within paragraphs, examples generally follow the claims they support, and the final paragraph sensibly qualifies the opinion by recognising that change may take time. To make the flow more flexible, rely less on formulaic transitions and connect some ideas through clearer reference or cause-and-effect links. For example, the shift from reducing expenses to finding additional work could be explained as alternative responses to different financial circumstances.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for discussing employment, finances, and personal change, with useful phrases such as “support their family,” “gain qualifications,” and “better quality of life.” However, the range is often general, and several spelling errors are conspicuous, including “chooce,” “circumstences,” “gennrally,” and “prespective.” These errors do not prevent understanding, but their frequency and the repeated use of broad terms such as “situation,” “people,” and “better” limit precision and control. Aim to proofread spelling carefully and choose more specific expressions where possible—for example, distinguish between financial hardship, job dissatisfaction, and temporary setbacks. More accurate collocations and a wider selection of topic-specific vocabulary would strengthen the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex structures, including conditional clauses (“if a person has an unsatisfactory job”), relative clauses, and concession (“Although these actions may require time and effort”). Most sentences communicate their meaning clearly, and the overall sentence patterns are varied enough for the task. Some grammatical errors remain, however. In “a person who dislike their job,” the verb should agree with the singular subject; “people who have financial problem” needs a plural noun or an article; and “problem may also be temporary” needs a determiner or plural form. The conclusion also contains a duplicated “can” in “can sometimes can be necessary.” These are generally local errors, but careful editing of agreement, articles, and sentence construction would improve accuracy.
