IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people believe that it is best to accept a bad situation, such as an unsatisfactory job or shortage of money. Others argue that it is better to try and improve such situations.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
There is a constant debate among several people over the past years that either they should accept there bad situation such as unsatisfactory jobs or the shortage of money as their fate and some believe that they should work harder to improve their situations. I highly agree with this statement that everyone should work hard to improve their current situations but we need to understand also that for some people it wont fit well due to family and society pressure.
Imagine someone who is the only provider for the family . He has to pay bills , manage expenses , school fees and other household expenses. So for him it wont be possible to quit his unsatisfactory job. So he settles for less and accept this as his fate because he cant handle the pressure of change.
But this mindset wont change or sustain his current life for long term . With the increase in inflation the cost of living has increased and a person like him who settled for less would eventually face shortage of money and would not be respected either by the family nor the society so he should work hard and constantly try to change his current situation
And if he keeps on working hard he will not only be able to sustain his life but also will help him to earn respect in the society. The hardwork is the only solution to everyones problem .
With hardship comes ease , everyone should stick to this quote . That if they constantly try for something they will eventually see the positive results in a long run no matter what the problem is either its job issue or funds everything will settle down .
In conclusion , the ones who keeps on working hard to improve their current situation will eventually find success and the ones who settle for less and doesnot do anything to improve their situation in result will see nothing but criticism , poverty and poor life in future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and state a clear preference for trying to improve one’s circumstances. The example of a sole family provider explains why someone might remain in an unsatisfactory job, while your discussion of inflation and future financial pressure supports the case for change. However, the first view is mainly presented as a practical constraint rather than explored as a reason to accept a difficult situation, and some claims—such as that a person will not be respected by family or society—are asserted without support. Your conclusion reinforces your position, but the argument would be stronger if you developed the benefits and limitations of both choices more evenly and explained realistic ways people might improve their circumstances.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining why a provider may stay in a job, further paragraphs supporting change, and a conclusion. The example gives the discussion a clear starting point, and phrases such as “But” and “In conclusion” signal shifts. However, progression is uneven: the second view receives more development, and the paragraph beginning “And if he keeps on working hard” largely repeats the previous point. Some links are mechanical or unclear, particularly “With hardship comes ease” and the following “That if they constantly try,” which does not connect smoothly to a complete sentence. Organise the body into two balanced view paragraphs, then use a separate paragraph for your opinion and conclusion, with clearer links between claims and examples.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “unsatisfactory job,” “provider,” “inflation,” “cost of living,” and “shortage of money.” These choices make the main ideas understandable, and “settles for less” conveys the idea of accepting limited circumstances. However, several expressions are repetitive or imprecise, including repeated uses of “current situation,” “work hard,” and “settle for less.” Some collocations are awkward, such as “sustain his current life” and “earn respect in the society,” while “hardwork” is incorrectly formed as one word. Aim for more precise alternatives and vary the language used to describe financial pressure, employment, and improvement. More natural collocations would make the argument sound clearer and more academic.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a conditional example beginning “Imagine someone who is the only provider” and a contrast introduced by “but.” However, errors in sentence structure, agreement, verb forms, and punctuation are frequent enough to make some sentences difficult to follow. For example, “either they should accept there bad situation” has an unclear construction and incorrect possessive form, while “the ones who keeps on working hard” has subject–verb disagreement. The sentence beginning “That if they constantly try” is a fragment, and several long sentences run together without effective punctuation. Practise building complete sentences with clear subjects and verbs, and check agreement and sentence boundaries when editing.
