IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people believe that it is best to accept a bad situation, such as an unsatisfactory job or shortage of money. Others argue that it is better to try and improve such situations.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Many individuals think that it is a better approch to accept a critical situation, such as an unsatisfactory job or shortage of money, while others argue that it will be more beneficial if they will try to improve such situations. In this essay both perspectives will be discussed, and I believe people can improve themselves and the situations they are in despite their responsibilities.
Supporters of this view argue that it is better to be in a situation they are not satisfied with. This is mainly because some people cannot change thair situations because of their personal problems. To illustrate, many people are still doing an unsatisfactory job because of their family responsibilities, and the personal reasons they have in their life. Therefore, it will be more advantageous for them in the future if they will continue their job for the long time.
In contrast, those who support the alternative view believe that people can change their life situations if they will try hard in their life. To explain it in simple words, they can work on themselves which will create more opportunities for them in the future. For instance, if some people are doing unsatisfactory job than they can learn new skills which will assist them to obtain better position in the same organization or they can apply for a better job where their skills will be respected. Moreover, if some people are facing financial problems in their life than they can find a job or start a new business to become financially free.
To conclude, although some people cannot change their life situations because of personal and family responsibilities they have in their life, I believe they can still try to change their life and their situations by working on themselves.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses both views and gives a clear personal position: the introduction says people can improve their circumstances, and the conclusion restates this view. The examples about family responsibilities, learning new skills, and seeking better work are relevant. However, the two sides are not developed equally. The case for accepting a difficult situation is mainly explained through family obligations, while the claim that staying in a job will be advantageous “in the future” is not clarified. The improvement argument has more detail, but the financial example—finding a job or starting a business—would benefit from explanation of how this is realistic for people already facing money problems. Develop each main reason with a clearer consequence or supporting detail.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. The progression from accepting circumstances to trying to improve them is easy to follow, and signposts such as “In contrast,” “For instance,” and “To conclude” help guide the reader. This already shows a coherent arrangement, but some linking is mechanical, with repeated patterns such as “To illustrate” and “To explain it in simple words.” References such as “this view” in the second paragraph could also be clearer, since the introduction presents both perspectives. To strengthen cohesion, vary transitions and use more precise references, while making the relationship between each example and its main point explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main ideas about work, responsibilities, skills, and finances, and phrases such as “family responsibilities” and “financial problems” are relevant to the topic. However, the range is limited and several noticeable word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors reduce precision. Examples include “approch,” “thair,” “change their life situations,” and “financially free”; the last phrase is understandable but not the most natural way to describe improved financial security. Repeated use of “life,” “situation,” and “better” also makes the expression less varied. Build a more precise set of topic vocabulary and check spelling and natural word combinations when revising.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response uses both simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses beginning with “because,” “although,” and “if.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “if they will try” and “if they will continue” use an unsuitable future form after “if”; “doing unsatisfactory job” is missing an article; and “a better position” needs an article in the later example. The sentence beginning “For instance, if some people are doing…” also becomes long and would be clearer if divided or more carefully structured. Practise conditional forms, articles, and sentence boundaries, while retaining the range of clauses already attempted.
