IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people believe that it is best to accept a bad situation, such as an unsatisfactory job or shortage of money. Others argue that it is better to try and improve such situations.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Whether to accept a bad situation or continue to struggle to change unfavourable conditions is a widely debated issue nowadays. Both these perspectives have there own advantages and disadvantages. I beleive that a person should try to improve bad situations in life with a positive approach by improving his personal skills.
On the one hand, some people believe that bad situations result from bad luck. Moreover, despite good qualifications and useful skill many people face financial crisis in life are due to unfortunate events. As these situations are not in our control so people should accept them as their fate. They think that lack of resilience may result in unnecessary stress in life for situations which are not in our control.
On the other hand, many people believe in continues effort to change bad circumstances. Furthermore, many people think that situations like unsatisfactory job or bad relationships need to be addressed with seriousness instead of just accepting and tolerating them.
I believe in trying to improve our deficiencies and working on areas of weaknesses without taking stress. In addition, I suggest a postive approach towards disappointing situations in life. For instance a person in a low salary job should continue to improve his resume and search for a better employment. Likewise, problems in personal life like bad relationship should be sort-out by discussion and finding solution to the problem instead of ignoring and suffering.
There is always a room for change and fortune always offers new opportunities to people. I think that we should keep ourself ready to grap the good opportunities by improving our work experience and skills and maintaining a balance between work and peace of mind.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both views and state your position clearly: you favour trying to improve difficult circumstances while maintaining a positive approach. The discussion of acceptance is relevant, especially the point that some hardship may arise from events outside a person’s control and that resistance can create stress. Your examples of improving a résumé or discussing relationship problems also support your opinion. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the case for accepting a bad situation receives only a brief explanation, while your own view gets more detail. Some claims, such as “fortune always offers new opportunities,” are broad rather than explained. To strengthen the response, develop the reasons behind each view and clarify when acceptance might be sensible versus when action is possible.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The essay has a clear overall progression: an introduction, a paragraph for each viewpoint, a paragraph explaining your opinion with examples, and a concluding statement. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “For instance” helps readers follow the argument. The conclusion also returns to your central idea about preparing for opportunities. At times, however, linking expressions feel mechanical or do not show a precise relationship between ideas; for example, “Moreover” and “Furthermore” introduce points that could be connected more explicitly. The final paragraph combines several ideas—opportunity, work experience, skills, and peace of mind—without fully showing how they relate. Use clearer references and vary transitions by expressing cause, contrast, or consequence directly.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “unfavourable conditions,” “resilience,” “financial crisis,” and “personal skills.” These choices help communicate the discussion, and phrases such as “balance between work and peace of mind” show an attempt to express nuanced ideas. There are, however, some spelling and word-choice errors, including “beleive,” “postive,” “continues effort,” and “grap.” A few combinations are also unnatural: “bad relationships” and “sort-out by discussion” could be expressed more precisely. These issues do not prevent understanding, but they limit the accuracy and flexibility of the vocabulary. Check spelling carefully and learn common collocations for employment, relationships, and responding to hardship.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “despite good qualifications…” and “instead of just accepting and tolerating them.” Most ideas remain understandable, and the examples are generally expressed in complete sentences. Some grammatical errors persist, however. In “many people face financial crisis in life are due to unfortunate events,” the sentence structure is incomplete and the subject–verb relationship is unclear. “As these situations are not in our control so…” also combines two linking structures unnecessarily. There are further issues with articles and agreement, as in “There is always a room” and “keep ourself ready.” Review clause construction, articles, and pronoun agreement, then proofread each sentence for a clear subject and verb.
