IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that it is best to accept a bad situation, such as an unsatisfactory job or shortage of money. Others argue that it is better to try and improve such situations.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Several individuals think that it is the right choice to accept such circumstances where a person is not happy with where they currently are. But there also exists a group of people who opposes this point of view and believe that a person should try to improve and make their way out of the bad situations.

When a person leaves things as they are, most of the time tagging it with the name "Fate", they invite bad habits such as giving up easily, envying others all the time and also depression. A person who decides to keep himself trapped in an unsatisfying situation decides to live in misery. They start to feel depressed and unlucky. They feel like the victims of the society who were never given a chance. However, the people who decide to refine their condition by putting effort, ends up having a stronger self belief. For instance, If a person is in a difficult situation, and they work hard to get out of it, not only are they in a better position but now they have built self confidence. They have more believe in themselve and are also more resilient to challenges. The change might be small but it nourished something in their personality.

I strongly support the fact that if a person ends up in a scenario where he/she dont get the satisfaction, he/she should always try to find ways to get out of that situation or refine that situation. Before playing the victim of a bad situation, a person should hold themselve accountable and do whatever possible effort they can to turn the situation until they are happy.

In conclusion, accepting bad circumstances will only lead you to self destruction and depression while finding a way out can help you have more faith in yourself. You are always ready for a change because you know you have done it once and you can always do it in different circumstances as well.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both perspectives and make your own position clear: you argue that people should try to improve difficult circumstances. The discussion of acceptance is relevant, especially the point that treating hardship as “Fate” may encourage people to give up, while effort can build resilience and confidence. However, the two views are not explored equally: acceptance is mainly presented through negative consequences, with little recognition of why someone might reasonably accept a situation, such as limited options or the need to adapt. The example of working hard to escape difficulty supports your view, but remains general. Develop the opposing case fairly and add a more specific example or explanation to make the discussion more balanced and fully supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining consequences, a paragraph stating your opinion, and a conclusion. Ideas generally progress from the effects of accepting hardship to the benefits of taking action, and linking phrases such as “For instance” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. Some connections are less smooth, however. The second paragraph moves between acceptance and improvement several times, so separating the two views or using clearer topic sentences would make the progression easier to follow. The conclusion also shifts to direct address (“you”), although the essay has mostly discussed people in general. Keep the point of view consistent and use referencing and transitions more precisely to strengthen cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary to discuss the topic, including “unsatisfying situation,” “resilient to challenges,” “self-confidence,” and “accountable.” These choices communicate your main ideas, and attempts such as “refine their condition” show an effort to use less common language. Some expressions are imprecise or unnatural, though: “make their way out of the bad situations” could be more concise, and “nourished something in their personality” does not express the intended idea naturally. There are also word-form and spelling slips, including “believe” where “belief” is needed and “themselve.” Aim for accurate collocations and natural phrasing rather than choosing a more elaborate expression when a simpler one is clearer.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including conditional phrasing (“If a person is in a difficult situation…”) and a contrastive construction (“not only are they in a better position but now they have built self confidence”). Meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “a group of people who opposes” should use subject–verb agreement, and “the people who decide… ends up” also has an agreement error. In “he/she dont get,” the auxiliary needs to agree with the subject, while “hold themselve accountable” contains an incorrect reflexive form. Capitalisation after “For instance” and the comma placement in longer sentences also need attention. Proofread agreement, pronouns, and punctuation while retaining your varied sentence structures.
