IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people believe that it is best to accept a bad situation, such as an unsatisfactory job or shortage of money. Others argue that it is better to try and improve such situations.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Many people in recent times believe that when they face an unsatisfactory situation such as an average job or shortage of money, they must accept it and be grateful. While others oppose this view and suggest that every individual should try to work hard and improve their lifestyle for constant growth. I firmly believe that for better future we must try to improve our situation at every stage of our life.
To begin with, those who argue that it is best to accept a bad situation, claim that many people around the world can be found without the basic needs required by the humans and we should be very grateful for every little blessing we have, rather than feel jealous from the ones above us and starve for better future. They also argue that in pursuit of something better, people tend to take their current blessings for granted and even lose their current position.
In contrast, others argue that, if the people find themselves in any undesirable situation they must desire for better and keep working hard to improve their situation. People argue that if we accept our situation despite deserving better, we give up our chance to improve by our own hands. Many people in this modern world are unable to achieve higher because they stay in their comfort zone, while the outstanding achievers are the one who constantly work harder for improved lifestyles and better future. For example, many professional employees stay in the same institution for decades and they find themselves at a lower position in comparision to someone who shifts across different organisations throughout their professional career.
In view of all the arguements, I largely believe that starvation for better future is the key to success and to stand out in the audience of billions, we must work hard and search for enhanced opportunities to become a succesfull person in this world.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both views and state your position clearly: you support trying to improve one’s circumstances. The first body paragraph gives relevant reasons for acceptance, including gratitude for basic needs and the risk of taking existing blessings for granted; the second explains how effort may create opportunities and includes an employment example. This meets the task well, but the discussion is not equally developed: the acceptance argument is mostly general, and the example about changing organisations does not fully show how this improves a person’s situation. Your conclusion also repeats the position rather than drawing together the two arguments. To strengthen the response, explain the reasoning behind each view more precisely and connect examples directly to the claims they support.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a concluding opinion. Signposts such as “To begin with” and “In contrast” help readers follow the change in perspective, and the main position remains consistent. Some connections, however, feel mechanical or unclear. For instance, “While others oppose this view” is a sentence fragment after the opening sentence, and “In view of all the arguements” introduces a conclusion that largely repeats earlier points. Within paragraphs, several ideas are joined in long sentences, making their relationships less precise. Use complete, well-linked sentences and clearer references between claims and examples to make the progression smoother and more flexible.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “basic needs,” “take their current blessings for granted,” “comfort zone,” and “professional career.” These choices make the discussion understandable and show attempts to express abstract ideas. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “starvation for better future” does not convey ambition naturally, “jealous from” is not the usual construction, and “stand out in the audience of billions” is an awkward expression. Spelling errors such as “comparision,” “arguements,” and “succesfull” also affect control. Aim for natural collocations and check spelling carefully; precise phrasing will make your argument sound more fluent and convincing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including subordinate clauses such as “when they face an unsatisfactory situation” and “while the outstanding achievers…” The meaning is generally clear, and errors rarely prevent understanding. Some grammatical problems remain, particularly with sentence boundaries, articles, agreement, and punctuation. The opening uses “While others oppose this view” as a fragment, while “the outstanding achievers are the one” has a singular-plural mismatch. In “if the people find themselves,” the article is unnecessary in this general statement, and commas are sometimes placed awkwardly around clauses. Review these patterns and vary sentence structures while ensuring each sentence is complete and its subjects and verbs agree.
