IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that it is best to accept a bad situation, such as an unsatisfactory job or shortage of money. Others argue that it is better to try and improve such situations.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The conspirancy prevails among members of a society whether to accept life challenges such as unwanted job and financial shortage or to give a shot and improvise such circumstances. I assert that trying out best and improvising is a prudent appraoch.

Advocates in favor of acceptance of unusual situations contend that its a better option to stay there, though it could be an unwanted employment or financial issue. As they consider it having something is beneficial instead of nothing, thereby waiting for an opportunity to arrive itself without stepping out of this pressing menace and be a member of a rat race is better than trying out something new. To cite it more exactly, as overseas workers are unable to find any job so they prefer to do that job unwillingly at low wages living in impoverished condition. Therefore, hardly making their both ends meet while accepting bad situations.

Nonetheless, others concede that its far better to go for something else and try out new options to enhance your living standards as well as manage your finances effeiciently. Therefore, to do what you enjoy provides a feeling of contentment as it calms your senses and expand your horizons to go far beyoynd your limitations. It not only improve their lifestyle but also giving them financial freedom.

In conclusion, i assert that go far beyound your limits to live a standard and contend life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You present a relevant opinion—that trying to improve difficult circumstances is preferable—and you discuss both acceptance and change. The example of overseas workers gives some support to the acceptance view. However, the discussion is only partial: the reasons for accepting a bad situation are not clearly explained, and the case for change is mostly asserted through broad claims about contentment and financial freedom rather than developed with a specific example. Your conclusion repeats your preference but does not bring the two views together. The response also falls 17 words short of the required minimum, leaving limited space to develop the arguments. Explain each side more fully and support your position with a clear, relevant example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. Transitions such as “Nonetheless” and “In conclusion” help signal the direction of the discussion. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow. In the acceptance paragraph, the sentence beginning “As they consider it…” runs through several ideas without clearly showing how they connect, and the final sentence fragment (“Therefore, hardly making their both ends meet…”) interrupts the flow. The change paragraph also moves quickly from enjoyment to lifestyle and financial freedom. Use clearer topic sentences, divide complex ideas into complete sentences, and make references such as “they” and “it” unambiguous.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “financial shortage,” “impoverished condition,” “living standards,” and “financial freedom.” This shows an effort to express ideas beyond basic language. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, which sometimes makes the meaning harder to follow: “conspirancy prevails” does not express the intended debate, “improvise such circumstances” is unsuitable, and “contend life” is unclear. Spelling errors such as “appraoch,” “effeiciently,” and “beyoynd” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, natural phrases and check spelling carefully; simpler wording used accurately would communicate your argument more effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast introduced by “though” and a clause beginning “as overseas workers…”. However, complex sentences are often not controlled successfully, and errors occur frequently enough to make some passages difficult to read. For example, “As they consider it having something is beneficial” lacks a clear grammatical structure, while “Therefore, hardly making their both ends meet” is a sentence fragment. There are also agreement and verb-form problems in “it calms your senses and expand your horizons” and “It not only improve their lifestyle.” Practise building complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check agreement and clause structure before adding further ideas.
