IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people believe that it is best to accept a bad situation, such as an unsatisfactory job or shortage of money. Others argue that it is better to try and improve such situations.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
It is often debated that individuals should be flexiable to accept different situations in life like unsuitable job or low monthly income because it provides short-term peace and security, while others argue that these people should try there best to improve that situation to get long-term benefits. This esssay will discuss both prespectives before giving my own opinion.
On the one hand, it is firmly believe that people should stay in bad situation and do not risk anything for the sake of better life. This is because, an unsatisfactory job or less income provide with a sense of job security and enough money to deal with daily expenses. Although these situations are only beneficial in short-term, people do not want to lose their job and become penny less in the current economy. For instance, the rise unemployment despite having skilled labours, discourages many people to get out of their routine and find a new job. As the result, people start to accept their current job and salaries.
On the other hand, people contradict this idea and suggest that individuals should try their best to improve these situations. The main reason is that short-term benefits can be helpful to meet their financial problems but in long-term, accepting a bad situation cause distress and fatigue. To prevent that, individuals should try to make some efforts to overcome this problem like learning problem-solving skills or changing careers. This not only help people to improve their future living standards but also sets a path to long-term growth and fulfillment.
To conclude, although accepting a bad situation helps in short-term with providing job stability, I firmly believe that improving a situation will be beneficial for the long-term growth which can be achieved by learning new skills that can open doors for the future opportunities.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both views and state a clear opinion: the introduction previews the discussion, and the conclusion supports improving a bad situation for long-term growth. Relevant reasons are given, including job security and the risk of unemployment on one side, and distress, fatigue, and future development on the other. The example about unemployment adds some support. However, the first view is framed mainly as avoiding risk, and the explanation of how an unsatisfactory job or low income can provide “enough money” is not fully convincing or clarified. The second view would also benefit from a more specific example showing how learning skills or changing careers improves circumstances. This covers the task well overall, but some ideas need fuller, clearer development.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for each view, and a conclusion. The progression from short-term security to long-term improvement is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “To conclude” help readers navigate the argument. Within paragraphs, ideas generally follow a sensible order, and the conclusion returns to the stated position. Some linking is a little mechanical, however, and phrases such as “This is because” and “As the result” do not always connect the reasoning smoothly. The reference in “these situations” is also broad. To strengthen cohesion, use a wider range of natural transitions and make links between claims and examples more explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “job security,” “daily expenses,” “financial problems,” “living standards,” and “long-term growth.” These choices make the main ideas clear, and attempts at more formal language such as “distress and fatigue” and “fulfillment” suit the discussion. However, several spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “flexiable,” “esssay,” and “prespectives” are misspelled, while “penny less” is not the natural form for this context. Some collocations are also awkward, including “provide with a sense of job security” and “sets a path to long-term growth.” Aim for accurate spelling and more natural combinations of words; this would make the vocabulary more flexible and precise without changing your clear meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a contrast clause beginning “Although these situations…” and a relative clause in “which can be achieved by learning new skills.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the overall argument remains understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with agreement and verb forms: “it is firmly believe” should be “it is firmly believed,” “less income provide” needs a singular verb, and “accepting a bad situation cause” should be “causes.” There are also issues with articles and sentence construction, as in “stay in bad situation” and “This not only help people.” Review subject–verb agreement and article use, then proofread each sentence for a complete, correctly formed structure.
