IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that it is best to accept a bad situation, such as an unsatisfactory job or shortage of money. Others argue that it is better to try and improve such situations.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Whether to accept a bad situation or continue struggle to change bad situation is widely debated in society. I think that individuals should try to improve unsatisfactory situations with a positive approach.

On the one hand, many people think that situations like unsatisfactory job or poverty need to be dealt with patience. These situations actually require human tolerance. Moreover, some people think that bad suituations in life are due to our bad luck. So we should embrace our fortune. A person with poverty should try to remain contented with what he have. Futhermore, some people think that trying to improve situation is useless and will create unnecessary anxiety of situations which we cannnot control consequently it will bring more harm than good.

On the other hand, many people think that struggle to improve bad condition is worthwhile. For example, a person in job with hostile environment or low salary should continue to search for another employment opportunity. Likewise person in bad relationship can sortout the situation by discussion. These people have perspective that luck always provides chance to everyone so we should continue to improve our skills and learn new techniques to grab the better opportunities.

In conclusion, I think we should have a positive approach toward disappointing life circumstances and I think we should keep on trying to improve our abilities to tackle our unwanted personal and social problems, At the same time we should avoid unnecessary stress for situations, which are not in our control. I also suggest to maintain a work-life balance for peace of mind and always look forward for better opportunities in life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state your own position clearly: you favour trying to improve difficult circumstances while avoiding stress over what cannot be controlled. The examples of seeking another job and discussing problems in a relationship make the second view relevant and concrete. However, the acceptance view is less fully explained: the claims about patience, bad luck and contentment are listed, but their reasoning and implications are not developed. Your conclusion also introduces work-life balance and personal and social problems without connecting these points closely to the discussion. Develop each side with a clearer explanation of why people hold that view, and make your final opinion more directly synthesise the two arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. Signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help the reader follow the discussion, and the examples generally appear in the relevant paragraph. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some of the stronger progression expected at the next level. However, several ideas are joined mechanically with “Moreover,” “Furthermore,” and “Likewise,” rather than showing their precise relationship. The long sentence beginning “some people think that trying to improve” is difficult to follow, and “These people” has an unclear reference. Use clearer sentence boundaries and transitions that explain cause, contrast or example.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of relevant vocabulary, including “human tolerance,” “hostile environment,” “unnecessary anxiety,” and “work-life balance,” so the main ideas are understandable. There are also attempts at less common expressions, such as “embrace our fortune” and “grab the better opportunities,” but these are not natural or precise in context. Several spelling errors—“situations” misspelled as “situations” in “bad suituations,” “Futhermore,” and “cannnot”—and awkward combinations such as “sortout the situation” reduce accuracy. This fits a limited but adequate range with noticeable word-choice and spelling problems. Build precision by learning common collocations and checking spelling; for example, use “accept one’s circumstances” and “pursue better opportunities.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex forms, including a relative clause in “situations, which are not in our control” and a conditional-style explanation of consequences. Most of the argument remains understandable, but some errors in sentence structure, agreement, articles and punctuation weaken control. For example, “what he have” should be “what he has,” and “Likewise person” needs an article. The sentence beginning “some people think that trying to improve” runs several ideas together and needs clearer punctuation or division. The conclusion also joins separate statements with a comma before “At the same time.” These are some errors rather than a breakdown in communication. Check subject–verb agreement and articles, and vary complex sentences while keeping each clause clearly connected.
