IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
It is often argued whether we should accept a bad condition like an unsatisfactory job or having a little money,or we should try to improve it. This essay will examine both viewpoints before presenting my own opinion.
On the one hand, accepting a bad situation can bring peace of mind.Constantly fighting against problems that are difficult to change can lead to stress, anxiety and disappointments. For example,if a person is stuck in low-paying job during an economic recession, accepting it temporarily may help them to avoid mental pressure and focus on other positive aspects of life, such as family.Furthermore, some people believe in fate, thinking that satisfaction is a key to happiness. In my point of view, accepting situation bring you a mentally peace and also a sign of maturity.
On the other hand, trying to improve the condition is necessary for personal progress and success. If people easily accept an unsatisfactory job, they may never develop a new skill or find a eligible career that motivates them. For intance,if a person who is not happy with low paying job can join an evening course to learn computer skills and then get a better job with a better salary.History shows that most successful people achieved success because they refused to accept their bad conditions. Therefore, the desire to improve not only changes the financial situation but alo builds confidence.
From my perspective, although acceptance can reduce stress in the short term,I strongly believe that one should try to improve adverse situations.Accepting a bad situation should be a temporary strategy ,not a permanent solution.Life become meaningful when people set goals and work hard to overcome challenges.
To conclude, accepting a bad situation gives temporary peace of mind, but its stop our progress. Therefore,I believe it is much better to work hard and try to improve situations for successful life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response addresses both views and gives a clear, consistent opinion: acceptance may help in the short term, but people should ultimately try to improve their circumstances. The examples of accepting a low-paid job during a recession and taking an evening course to gain computer skills are relevant and help explain each position. The conclusion also reinforces the argument. This fits the criterion because the main ideas are extended and supported, although some claims remain broad—for example, “most successful people” achieved success by refusing to accept bad conditions. The discussion of acceptance could also be developed further by explaining when a situation may genuinely be beyond someone’s control. More precise qualification and fuller development of that side would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. Its progression is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “From my perspective” make the argument’s direction clear. Examples are generally placed alongside the points they support. Cohesion is effective overall, though some linking is rather formulaic, and the final paragraph repeats the central contrast between temporary acceptance and improvement already stated in the opinion paragraph. There are also places where ideas could connect more smoothly, such as the shift from believing in fate to the claim about maturity. Use a wider range of referencing and transitions, and make each paragraph add a distinct step to the argument.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for discussing work, money, wellbeing, and personal development. Phrases such as “peace of mind,” “economic recession,” “personal progress,” and “short-term strategy” communicate relevant ideas, and the writer attempts less common expressions such as “adverse situations.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “a bad condition,” “a eligible career,” and “a mentally peace.” There are also spelling errors such as “intance” and “alo,” alongside repetition of “bad situation” and “improve.” These issues do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Build accuracy by learning common word partnerships and checking spelling, while varying repeated terms with context-appropriate alternatives.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex forms, including conditional structures (“if a person is stuck… accepting it temporarily may help”) and a concessive clause (“although acceptance can reduce stress…”). Most ideas remain understandable, and the writer attempts to connect clauses in varied ways. Some grammatical errors persist, however: “accepting situation bring” has an article and agreement problem, “Life become meaningful” has incorrect subject–verb agreement, and “its stop our progress” uses an incorrect pronoun and verb form. Article use is also inconsistent in phrases such as “stuck in low-paying job.” Punctuation spacing around commas and full stops needs attention as well. Review articles, agreement, and pronoun forms, then proofread sentence endings and punctuation.
