IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people believe that it is best to accept a bad situation, such as an unsatisfactory job or shortage of money. Others argue that it is better to try and improve such situations.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is often argued that it is better for the most people to accept negative situations such as an unsatisfactory job or lack of money, other contend that it is vital to try and improve these situations. I strongly believe that one should try to improve oneself so that these situations could be prevented from rising. In the ensuing essay, I shall explain that by better planning and financial management, we can prevent these problems.
On the one hand, supporters of accepting a bad situation contend that it is essential for people to move on from problems, rather than sticking to these, so that they can prevent the loss of time, and use that time to look for further opportunities. For example, if the person has a job that he finds very unsatisfactory, he should try to adapt to the job, and should not just quit because it is possible he could not get a job that satisfies him.
On the other hand, proponents of trying to improve such situations maintain that it is vital to try to improve these situations by better planning, before taking a step, and strong financial management. This is because if we plan everything before doing something, and stay within our budget, there are less chances that there will be any problems rising from these situations. Nevertheless, it is not possible to be 100% sure before doing anything. There can be problems rising, even if we we do all the planing.
In conclusion, although, it is good to accept the situation and move on, I firmly believe that it is essential that we try to improve our situation by some planning and managing our assets before doing something.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You discuss both positions and state a clear preference for improving difficult circumstances, particularly through planning and financial management. The example of staying in an unsatisfactory job also gives the acceptance view some relevant support. However, the response only partly develops the central contrast: the first view is mainly presented as moving on and avoiding a risky resignation, while the case for actively improving a situation is explained in broad terms rather than through a specific route, such as seeking training or a better job. Your claim that planning can prevent problems is also not fully reconciled with the later point that problems may still arise. Develop each side more fully and make your opinion directly address when acceptance or change is preferable.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” makes the progression easy to follow, and the main position is repeated at the end. This coherent arrangement meets the expected level, while some linking remains mechanical or imprecise. For instance, “these situations” is repeated several times in the second body paragraph, and “Nevertheless” introduces a qualification without clearly showing how it relates to the preceding claim about planning. The introduction also promises an explanation of prevention, whereas the first body paragraph focuses on accepting or adapting. Use clearer references and connect each paragraph’s ideas more explicitly to the essay’s central comparison.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for the topic, including phrases such as “financial management,” “move on from problems,” “further opportunities,” and “adapt to the job.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and some more formal expressions, such as “proponents” and “maintain,” show an attempt to vary your vocabulary. However, several phrases are awkward or imprecise, including “the most people,” “problems rising from these situations,” and “strong financial management.” There are also spelling and word-form slips, such as “planing,” which should be checked carefully. Aim for more natural collocations and avoid repeating “improve these situations”; more precise wording would make your argument sound clearer and more controlled.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures such as “if the person has a job…” and a concession beginning “although.” Most sentences remain understandable, and the range is sufficient to express both views. Some grammatical errors persist, however. In the opening, “other contend” needs a plural subject, and “so that these situations could be prevented from rising” has an awkward passive construction. The sentence beginning “there are less chances” also has an agreement and comparative-form problem; use “there is less chance” or “there are fewer chances.” In the conclusion, the comma after “although” is unnecessary, and the clause structure around “it is essential that we try” could be made more direct. Review agreement, clause construction, and punctuation while retaining your complex sentences.
