IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart compares the export earnings(in billions) across four different categories of the particular country in the year between 2015 to 2016. Table illustrates the data of percentage change in earning in each category in 2016 as compared to the export in 2015.

Overall, the trend shows increase in the export with the petroleum products leading the chart followed by engineered product. The decline is seen in gems and jewellery. There is a slight difference in agriculture products. Textiles indicate sharp increase.

The export earning of petroleum product in 2015 is about 61 billions as compared to 64 billions in 2016 showing 3% increase in amount. Engineered products show drastic increase of 8.5% in income in 2016 as compared to 2015.

Gems and jewellery items are declined to 5.18% in 2016. Moreover, agricultural products display slight difference of 0.81%. The most abrupt increase is seen in textiles. There is a increase of 15.24% in textile category in 2016 as compared to 2015.

This is the overview of both the data show in the table and bar chart.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main pattern accurately: petroleum products remain the leading export, gems and jewellery decline, and textiles show the strongest growth. The overview also notes the small change in agriculture, so the key features are covered. Several figures are reported, including petroleum at about 61 billion and the percentage changes for the categories. However, the petroleum figure for 2016 is given as 64 billion, whereas the chart indicates about 63 billion, and the discussion of engineered goods, gems and agriculture gives little detail about their actual earnings. The phrase “declined to 5.18%” also confuses the percentage fall with the export value. This is a relevant, generally clear summary, but fuller and more precise comparisons would strengthen it further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing the categories. This makes the main message easy to follow, and the contrast between growth and decline is signposted with phrases such as “Moreover” and “The most abrupt increase.” However, the final sentence, “This is the overview of both the data show,” repeats the purpose of the response rather than adding information, and the category details are split in a way that leaves some comparisons underdeveloped. Connections between the chart values and the table percentages could be clearer. Aim for a more purposeful final paragraph and use linking phrases to compare categories directly, rather than relying mainly on a sequence of separate statements.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of task-related vocabulary, including “export earnings,” “percentage change,” “decline,” and “increase,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more descriptive wording, such as “drastic increase” and “abrupt increase.” Some choices are inaccurate or repetitive, however: “declined to 5.18%” does not clearly express a fall in export value, while “slight difference” is vague for the agricultural change. “Engineered product” is also less natural than the category label “engineered goods.” Use precise terms such as “rose by,” “fell by,” and “stood at” to distinguish values from percentage changes, and avoid repeating “increase” when a more exact comparison is available.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including comparisons with “as compared to” and a multi-clause overview, and the reader can generally understand your meaning. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with articles, agreement, and verb forms. For example, “Table illustrates” needs an article, “Gems and jewellery items are declined” has an incorrect verb construction, and “There is a increase” uses the wrong article. The opening phrase “in the year between 2015 to 2016” also has an awkward preposition pattern. Check singular and plural forms, use past tense consistently for the completed years, and proofread articles and sentence boundaries. More accurate control of these patterns would make your varied sentences clearer.
