Student answer (Band 6.0)

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main direction of change and include several useful comparisons: petroleum products remain the largest export, engineered goods rise, gems and jewellery fall, and textiles increase substantially. Most chart figures are close to the reference, although textiles in 2016 are given as “over 33$” rather than about $31.5 billion. The overview also says textiles increased, but does not highlight that this was the largest percentage rise; the table’s 15.24% is omitted. More importantly, the final paragraph reports only three percentage changes and leaves out agricultural products and textiles, while “Gems decreased to 5.18%” confuses the percentage change with the export value. Covering all table figures accurately and distinguishing values from percentage changes would make the summary more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph comparing the chart values, and a final paragraph on percentage changes. This gives the reader a coherent overall route through the information. However, the final paragraph is incomplete and does not connect smoothly to the preceding comparisons, since it mentions only three categories and ends abruptly. Some linking is also mechanical or unclear, as in “By 2016” and “During 2015 and 2016,” and “However” does not clearly signal a contrast when introducing the rise in textiles. Use a more systematic grouping of the categories and ensure each paragraph develops its stated focus fully. Clearer links between the overview and the detailed comparisons would strengthen progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “percentage variation,” “modestly decreased,” “remained,” and “accounted for.” These choices help describe trends and comparisons, and the meaning is generally understandable. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, however: “number of … exports” refers to quantity rather than monetary value, and “dramatically rose 8.5%” is not a natural way to report the table’s change. The repeated use of “near,” “around,” and “modestly” also limits precision. Take care with the category name “Gems and jewellery,” which is repeatedly written as “germs,” and use standard forms such as “$63 billion” rather than “63$ billions.” More precise chart language would improve clarity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast clause with “while” and a sentence beginning “By 2016.” Most of the information remains understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems are noticeable. For example, “petroleum products export was” has awkward singular agreement and structure; “which was the highest among others” does not clearly attach to the intended comparison; and “Petroleum and Engineered were relatively close” omits the noun needed to complete the phrase. Capitalisation and spacing are inconsistent, and “Overall.” should introduce a sentence with a comma rather than a full stop. Review articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries, while retaining the range of structures you are attempting.
