IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The given staistics draw a comparison between the export insights of the year 2015 and 2016. During the one year period, all the categories saw a considerable growth except the gems and jewellery industry. The most significant growth can be observed in the textiles category standing at 15.24%, which is greater than the growth of all the other categories combined. Textile exports crossed the mark of $30billion in earnings, thought it stood at nearly $25Billion in the previous year.

Petroleum exports recorded the highest earnings during both of the financial years. Moreover, Engineered goods brought the second highest revenue in the period of two years. Though, there was a fall in the demand of gems and jewellery, the category's earnings stayed above the mark of $40 Billion. In contrast, revenue generated from agricultural products remained almost stagnant by showing a growth of only 0.81%.

In conclusion, it is evident that the textiles industry had the least revenue comapred to other categories but had the most significant growth within a year. While, the petrochemical industry's growth was very nominal even though it had the highest revenue.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully identified the main features and provided a clear overview of the data. You correctly highlighted the significant growth in textiles and the decline in gems and jewellery. However, the report lacks precision in some areas; for instance, you state that textiles had the 'least revenue' in the conclusion, but the chart shows agricultural products had lower revenue. Additionally, while you mention the $30 billion mark for textiles, you could have provided more specific data points for other categories to better support your comparisons. Overall, the response covers the requirements well, but closer attention to data accuracy is needed to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized into an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'In contrast', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader through the information. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the overview from the specific details. However, the transition between the second and third paragraph could be smoother, and some referencing is slightly mechanical. The progression of ideas is clear, and the information is presented in a way that is easy to follow throughout the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly, using terms like 'considerable growth', 'stagnant', and 'nominal'. There are some minor spelling errors, such as 'staistics' and 'comapred', which do not impede communication but suggest a need for more careful proofreading. You attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary related to exports, which is appropriate for an Academic Task 1 response. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing when describing trends and figures.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'While, the petrochemical industry's growth was very nominal even though it had the highest revenue.' There are some grammatical slips, such as the incorrect use of 'thought' instead of 'though' and minor punctuation errors, particularly with comma placement after introductory clauses. Despite these occasional errors, your meaning is consistently clear, and the grammatical control is generally good. Increasing the variety of complex structures and ensuring consistent subject-verb agreement will help elevate your score further.
