IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The bar chart illustrates the value of one country's exports in various categories like: petroleum products, engineered goods, gems and jewellery, agricultural products and textiles during 2015 and 2016. The table represented the proportion of change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.
Overall, petroleum products accounted for the highest value in exporting, whereas textiles recorded the lowest value in both years 2015 and 2016. By contrast percentage change in value is the lowest for gems and jewellery, while textile represented highest percentage.
In 2015, export in various categories decreased over the period as a whole. petroleum products accounted for around 60 billion, followed by engineering goods to around 58 billion. The figure then fell significantly for remaining categories and reached just over 40 billion for gems and jewellery, 31 billion for agricultural products and 28 billion for textiles. By contrast, in 2016 petroleum products and engineering goods represented similar value just over 60 billion. Similarly, agricultural products and textiles also recorded similar values around 31 billion.
Turning to percentage change in value, textiles showed the highest proportion approximately 15.24% increment, while other remaining categories recorded smaller increment like: 8.5% for engineered goods, 3% for petroleum products and only 0.81% for agricultural products. By contrast for gems and jewellery there was decrement of 5.18%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers all parts of the task, including the bar chart and the table. You have successfully identified the main features, such as the highest and lowest export values and the percentage changes. However, there is a factual error in the third paragraph where you state that exports 'decreased over the period as a whole' in 2015, which is not supported by the data provided. Additionally, the comparison between the two years could be more analytical; rather than just listing figures, you should focus more on the trends and the relationship between the two datasets. Overall, the information is presented clearly, but the accuracy of the interpretation needs to be more precise.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'By contrast', and 'Similarly' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be improved by ensuring that the overview is distinct and the body paragraphs are balanced. The referencing is generally clear, though some sentences, such as 'By contrast percentage change in value is the lowest for gems and jewellery', lack a necessary article or smoother flow. The progression of ideas is generally logical, moving from the bar chart data to the table data effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'increment', and 'decrement' appropriately. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'represented' instead of 'represents' in the introduction, and the phrasing 'decreased over the period as a whole' is slightly confusing in this context. You attempt to use less common vocabulary, which is good, but there is room for more precise collocations. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly, but it does not consistently reach the level of flexibility required for a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('the' highest value, 'the' percentage change) and issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'The table represented' instead of 'represents'). Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'petroleum products accounted for around 60 billion, followed by engineering goods to around 58 billion'. Despite these errors, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on consistent tense usage and the correct application of articles and prepositions.
