Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the score. While you have identified some data points, the report lacks an overview of the main trends, which is a critical requirement for Task 1. You have listed individual figures but failed to synthesize the information or highlight the most significant changes across the categories. Furthermore, the response is incomplete as it does not reference the table provided in the prompt regarding percentage changes. To improve, ensure you provide a clear summary of the overall trends and include all data sources provided in the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into short paragraphs, which is a positive start. However, the progression of ideas is mechanical and repetitive. You rely heavily on simple sentence structures to list data points, which creates a disjointed flow. There is a lack of cohesive devices to link the sentences or compare the categories effectively. For example, using transition words like 'in contrast,' 'similarly,' or 'whereas' would help connect the data points and improve the logical flow of the report. The paragraphing is present but does not effectively group related information to guide the reader through the data.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. You frequently use the same phrasing, such as 'prices were across' and 'increased to,' which does not demonstrate the range required for higher bands. There are also errors in terminology, such as referring to export values as 'prices.' To achieve a higher score, you should use a wider variety of verbs and nouns to describe trends, such as 'fluctuated,' 'remained stable,' 'experienced a marginal increase,' or 'declined significantly.' Additionally, ensure you use accurate terminology for the data provided, such as 'export value' rather than 'prices.'
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response consists almost entirely of simple sentences. There is a lack of complex grammatical structures, which limits your ability to express relationships between the data points. You have made several punctuation and formatting errors, such as placing the dollar sign after the number (e.g., '60$billions') and inconsistent capitalization. There are also minor grammatical errors, such as 'the increased to' instead of 'it increased to.' To improve, practice using complex sentences with subordinating conjunctions (e.g., 'While petroleum exports rose to $62 billion, gems and jewellery saw a decline'). Focus on standardizing your punctuation and sentence structure.
