Student answer (Band 7.0)

The chart below illustrate the comparison in the value of change of percentage of a country's exports in distinct classes between two years 2015 and 2016.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all parts of the task by reporting on the export values and percentage changes for the five categories. You successfully identified the main features, such as the highest growth in textiles and the decline in gems and jewellery. However, the overview is slightly weak; it describes the data as 'significant amount of profit' which is not accurate for export values. To improve, ensure your overview highlights the most notable trends (e.g., the overall growth in most categories versus the decline in gems and jewellery) rather than focusing on 'profit'. The data is generally accurate, though ensure you clearly distinguish between the values (billions) and the percentages.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', 'Further', and 'Lastly' to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'thus, its proportion rose' and 'concerned textiles which exports in large quantity'. The referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking phrases rather than relying on simple sequence markers. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different categories of exports.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'earnings', 'increment', 'decline', and 'proportion'. There are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'value of change of percentage' (which is wordy) and 'profit' (when referring to export values). Additionally, there are minor spelling and collocation errors, such as 'comparetivly' and 'it remain low'. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise academic collocations and ensure spelling is accurate. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main points, but lacks the flexibility and precision required for a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('the chart below illustrate', 'it remain low') and sentence construction ('that was a huge profit and showed the highest percentage'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some run-on sentences and missing commas. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to limit the score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensure that your complex sentences are punctuated correctly to avoid run-on structures.
