IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The bar graph illustrates the value of a country's exports in various domains during 2015 and 2016 in billion dollars. The table depicts the change in percentage of exports in each domain comparing the two years.

Overall, 2016 can be seen a more beneficial year in the country's business than 2015, where the export earnings increased in each category except one, which is Gems and Jewellery, where the percentage went downhill compared to the former year. However, the highest percentage increase in values can be seen in the export of Textiles whereas the lowest is evident in Agricultural products' export.

In detail, the export of Petroleum products increased by 3% in 2016 than 2015. Likewise, Engineered goods' export increased by 8.5%, while Gems and Jewellery export took a substantial dip by 5.8%.

Subsequently, the export of Agricultural products saw a small increase by 0.81%, in contrast Textiles' export experienced a drastic increase by 15.24%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all parts of the task by summarizing the main features of the chart and table. You successfully identified the overall trend and highlighted key categories like Textiles and Gems and Jewellery. However, the report lacks specific data points from the bar chart (the actual export values in billions). While you mention the percentage changes from the table, the task requires reporting the 'value of exports' as shown in the chart. Including these figures would have provided a more comprehensive overview. The summary is clear, but adding the specific dollar amounts for the categories mentioned would elevate the response to a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'Likewise', 'Subsequently', and 'in contrast' to link ideas effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of information is easy to follow. To improve, ensure that the transition between the overview and the detailed body paragraphs is smoother. The structure is generally sound, and the use of referencing is clear throughout the text, which helps maintain a consistent flow of information.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'domains', 'beneficial', 'substantial dip', and 'drastic increase'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as '2016 can be seen a more beneficial year', which should be 'seen as a more beneficial year'. The phrase 'went downhill' is slightly informal for an academic report; 'declined' or 'decreased' would be more appropriate. Overall, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but incorporating more precise academic collocations would improve the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'The bar graph illustrates...' and '...where the export earnings increased in each category except one'. While there are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'increased by 3% in 2016 than 2015' (should be 'compared to 2015'), these errors do not impede communication. Your control of punctuation is generally good, and the majority of your sentences are clear. To reach a higher band, focus on ensuring consistent preposition usage and refining complex sentence structures to avoid minor errors.
