IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The bar chart illustrates the increment and decremental changes of the market value of high-end products like: petroleum products, engineered goods, gems and jewellery, agricultural products and textiles.

The table indicates that there has been significant rise of textiles product value, by 15% whereas gems and jewellery took the a significant drop comparatively, by 5.18%. Following up with the textiles market export, engineered goods comes up next, by 8.5%; from nearly 56 billion USD to making above 60 billion USD. Petroleum products also increased their export earnings by 3% which seems quiet low but still being at the very top of the chart as the most sold product via export earnings with nearly 62 billion USD beating engineered goods. In the market of petroleum products, engineered goods, gems and jewellery and textile, a very distinct market of agricultural products are also compared which earns nearly as much as textiles. However, the growth of this product export was not as much as it should've been (0.81%) though it is one of the necessities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully identified the main features of the data, such as the highest export values and the most significant percentage changes. However, the response lacks a clear overview or summary paragraph, which is essential for a Band 7 or higher. While you mention specific figures, the structure is somewhat disjointed, and the comparison between the bar chart and the table could be more integrated. To improve, ensure you provide a clear opening statement that summarises the overall trends before diving into the specific data points. Additionally, ensure all categories are clearly compared rather than listing them sequentially.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is generally coherent, and the information is organised logically by category. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical, and the paragraphing is insufficient; the entire body is contained within two paragraphs, with the second one being quite dense. Using more varied linking words (e.g., 'conversely', 'in contrast', 'furthermore') would help the flow. Additionally, the transition between the bar chart data and the table data could be smoother to ensure the reader understands how the two sources of information relate to one another.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the main points, using terms like 'export earnings', 'market value', and 'significant rise'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'increment and decremental changes' (which is redundant) and 'following up with the textiles market export'. Some phrasing is slightly unnatural, such as 'a very distinct market of agricultural products are also compared'. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise academic collocations and avoiding repetitive or slightly awkward phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'gems and jewellery took the a significant drop' (article error) and 'Petroleum products also increased their export earnings by 3% which seems quiet low' (spelling error: 'quiet' instead of 'quite', and missing punctuation). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles to improve the accuracy of your writing.
