Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the main features and making comparisons. However, the analysis is somewhat mechanical, simply listing figures rather than synthesizing the data effectively. The summary of the percentage change is missing, as the student focuses only on the raw values. To improve, ensure you integrate the data from the table (percentage change) with the bar chart values to provide a more analytical overview. The conclusion contradicts the body paragraphs regarding the performance of engineering goods, which suggests a lack of careful checking. Overall, the response addresses the prompt but lacks the depth required for a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organized into paragraphs, but the flow between sentences is often disjointed. The use of cohesive devices is repetitive (e.g., 'similarly' is used twice in quick succession) and sometimes misused, such as starting a sentence with 'looking bar graph'. The referencing is occasionally unclear, and the transition between the body and the conclusion is abrupt. To improve, use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, logical progression of ideas rather than just a list of data points.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic structures like 'value of' and 'in 2015/2016'. There is little attempt to use less common lexical items or precise terminology related to data description. Phrases like 'some different' are imprecise and lack the academic tone required for Task 1. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more varied verbs and nouns to describe trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'experienced a marginal increase', or 'remained stable'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, particularly with verb omission (e.g., 'petroleum products the most valuable export') and incorrect preposition usage (e.g., '2016 in $31'). The sentence structures are predominantly simple, and there is a lack of complex sentence forms. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing capital letters at the start of sentences and erratic spacing around numbers (e.g., '$58 .00'). Improving control over basic sentence construction and subject-verb agreement is essential for a higher score.
