IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The bar chart displays the worth of a nation's exports in different sectors from 2015 to 2016. The table displays the rate change in each sector of exports in 2016 in comparision with 2015. Overall, the difference in the billons of dollars spent in 2015on each category is not much compared to the amount of money spent on the exportation of the different products in 2016.
In the table, it is made clear that all the categories had an increase in the amount of money invested in them except for one category, Gems and jewellery, was the only category that less was spent on in 2016 than in 2015.
However, as most sectors had an increase in the amount of dollars spent on them, Agricultural products had the smallest increase of only 0.81%. In contrast, Textiles had a much larger increase of 15.24% in the money invested into it in 2016, thereby making it the category that had the biggest difference in the amount of money spent on exporting it in 2016.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have identified the main features of the data, such as the overall trend and the specific performance of the 'Gems and jewellery' and 'Textiles' categories. However, the response is somewhat limited in its analysis. You mention the 'billions of dollars' but fail to include any specific data points from the bar chart to support your summary. To achieve a higher band, you must integrate specific figures (e.g., the actual export values for 2015 and 2016) to illustrate your points. The overview is present but could be more detailed regarding the general trend across all categories rather than just noting that the differences were 'not much'.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and a body paragraph. You use cohesive devices such as 'However', 'In contrast', and 'thereby' to link ideas. However, the progression of ideas is slightly mechanical. The transition between the general overview and the specific details in the second paragraph is a bit abrupt. Additionally, the referencing in the second paragraph ('it is made clear that...') is slightly repetitive. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the flow of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'sectors', 'invested', and 'exportation'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'worth of a nation's exports' (value is more precise) and 'rate change' (percentage change). You also use 'billons' (spelling error) and 'comparision' (spelling error). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. Focusing on more precise collocations related to data reporting will help improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as the awkward phrasing in the sentence: 'Gems and jewellery, was the only category that less was spent on in 2016 than in 2015.' This sentence is structurally confusing. Another error is '2015on', which is a punctuation/spacing issue. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and refining the structure of complex sentences to avoid ambiguity.
