Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to summarize the data, but it fails to accurately report the figures provided in the chart and table. For instance, the student claims petroleum products were 60 billion in 2015, whereas the chart shows a different value. Furthermore, the description of the percentage changes is confusing and misinterprets the data, such as the claim that 'germany and jewellery' (likely 'gems and jewellery') fell by 5.81%. The response lacks a clear overview of the main trends, and the data selection is inaccurate, leading to a failure to clearly convey the information presented in the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is organized into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. While some cohesive devices like 'To begin with' and 'Furthermore' are used, they do not effectively link the ideas. The referencing is often unclear, and the transition between the bar graph data and the table data is disjointed. The internal structure of the paragraphs is confusing, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between the two years and the different categories. Improved paragraphing and more precise linking words are needed to enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and often inaccurate. There are several instances of word-choice errors, such as 'germany' instead of 'gems', and 'tabular chart represent' instead of 'represents'. The student struggles to use precise terminology for describing trends, relying on repetitive and sometimes incorrect phrasing like 'shows highest figure' or 'export increased to'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to convey the data with the necessary precision required for an Academic Task 1 response, which significantly impacts the clarity of the report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement ('tabular chart represent', 'products were shows'), incorrect verb tenses, and missing articles. Sentence structures are generally simple, and attempts at more complex sentences often result in errors, such as 'engineered goods and rose to 8.5%'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of commas and capitalization. To improve, the student should focus on basic sentence construction and proofreading for common errors in tense and agreement.
