IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart compares export earnings of one country by different categories- petroleum products, engineered goods, gems and jewellery, agricultural products and textiles, whereas, the table illustrates the proportion of change in values between 2015 and 2016.
Overall, in the both years, petroleum products were the highest paying export categories, while for textiles it was opposite. In terms of the growth, textile experienced the considerable growth and gems and jwellery witnessed downward progression.
Probing further, petroleum products and engineered goods were the top two export categories in the both years, accounted for approximately 60$ billion in 2015 and more than 60$ billion in 2016. Earnings from gems and jwellery reduced by roughly 2-3$ billion, while, it remained unchanged for agricultural products. However, textiles accounted for 25$ billion, which increased to more than 30$ billion in 2016.
Considering growth, the proportion of textiles climbed to 15.24% within a year. Furthermore, petroleum products, engineered goods and agricultural products showed 3%, 8.5% and 0.81% progression respectively. Lastly, the percentage for gems and jewellery decreased to 5.18%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
You have successfully identified the main features of the data and provided a clear overview. You included data for all categories and made relevant comparisons between the two years. However, there are some inaccuracies in your data reporting. For instance, you stated that petroleum products and engineered goods accounted for 'approximately 60$ billion' in 2015, whereas the chart shows them as separate categories with different values. Additionally, your interpretation of the percentage change for agricultural products as 'unchanged' contradicts the table, which shows a 0.81% increase. To reach a higher band, ensure that your data extraction is precise and that you clearly distinguish between the values of different categories.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized into paragraphs, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In terms of', 'Probing further', and 'Furthermore' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as the use of 'it' in 'while, it remained unchanged', where the antecedent is not immediately clear. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is generally easy to follow, though the connection between the bar chart data and the table data could be more seamlessly integrated.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'progression', and 'export earnings'. There are some minor spelling errors, such as 'jwellery' (jewellery), and some awkward phrasing, such as 'highest paying export categories' and 'downward progression'. The use of the dollar sign before the number (e.g., '60$ billion') is non-standard in English, where the symbol should precede the figure (e.g., '$60 billion'). To improve, focus on standardizing your formatting and refining your word choices to sound more natural and precise in an academic context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'in the both years' (should be 'in both years') and 'textile experienced the considerable growth' (should be 'textiles experienced considerable growth'). There are also issues with article usage and punctuation, particularly with comma placement. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing your control over articles and pluralization will help improve the accuracy of your writing.
