Student answer (Band 7.0)
The bar chart illustrates export earnings across five product categories in one country during 2015 and 2016, while the table details the corresponding percentage changes.
Overall, most categories experienced growth between the two years, with textiles registering the sharpest rise and gems and jewelry being the only category to decline.
Petroleum products remained the top earner in both years, edging up from roughly $61 billion to $63 billion, a modest 3% increase, Engineered goods showed stronger growth, climbing from $56 billion to $61 billion (8.5%), narrowing the gap with petroleum. Textiles, despite having the lowest earnings overall at roughly $22-23 billion, recorded the most significant percentage change, surging by 15.24%.
By contrast, gems and jewelry was the sole category to contract, falling by 5.18% from about $42 billion to 39% billion. Agricultural products remained largely static, edging up marginally by just 0.81%, from around $29 billion to $30 billion.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response effectively addresses the task by summarizing the main features of the provided chart and table. You have successfully identified the key trends, such as the growth in petroleum and engineered goods, and highlighted the contrasting performance of gems and jewelry. The inclusion of specific data points to support your observations demonstrates a good grasp of the information. To reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are precise; for instance, the statement '39% billion' is a typographical error that slightly confuses the data. Overall, the response is well-focused and covers all requirements of the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group information effectively. You have used cohesive devices such as 'By contrast,' 'Overall,' and 'despite having' to guide the reader through the data. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from general trends to specific category performance. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different aspects of the data. The flow is natural, and the relationship between the sentences is clear, which contributes to a coherent and easy-to-follow response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'edging up,' 'surging,' 'contract,' and 'static.' This demonstrates an ability to use less common items with an awareness of style. There is a minor error in the phrase '39% billion,' which is a slip in precision rather than a lack of vocabulary range. The language is generally accurate and appropriate for an academic report. To improve further, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for 'increase' or 'decrease' to avoid repetition and enhance the sophistication of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You have used participial phrases ('narrowing the gap') and concessive clauses ('despite having...') effectively. Most sentences are error-free, and the grammar is generally controlled. There is a minor error in the phrase '39% billion,' which is likely a slip, but it does not impede communication. Punctuation is used correctly throughout the text. The grammatical control is consistent, and the range of structures is sufficient to convey complex information clearly and accurately.
