The chart below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The first bar chart displays the export earnings of five categories in a particular nation for the years 2015 and 2016. The second table provides information about the percentage change in the value of each product between 2015 and 2016.

It is crystal clear that the majority of export earnings came from petroleum products and engineered goods, while the lowest level was from textiles. As for the ratio of product values, it can be seen that textiles had a significant increase. Moreover, gems and jewelry was the only category that saw a decline.

At the fleeting glance, the information in more detail: in 2015, the highest value of export earnings was found in petroleum products at nearly 61 billion, followed by engineered goods at around 57 billion. It is notable that the values for agricultural products were similar in 2016, with approximately 31 billion and 32 billion, respectively.

Moving further on to the second table, compared to 2015, the percentage value of textiles rose by 15.25% in 2016, which was higher than other items during the given period. Additionally, gems and jewelry was the only category that decreased, by 5.18%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the data, including the highest and lowest categories and the notable trends in the table. You provided a clear overview and supported your points with specific figures from the charts. However, the analysis is slightly uneven; for instance, the description of agricultural products is confusing, as you mention values for 2016 but compare them to 2015 without clearly stating the 2015 figures for that specific category. To reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are explicitly linked to the correct year and category to avoid ambiguity for the reader.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized into paragraphs, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'As for', and 'Moving further on to' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or slightly unnatural, such as 'At the fleeting glance'. Additionally, the referencing in the third paragraph is slightly unclear, as the connection between the 2015 and 2016 figures for agricultural products is not explicitly stated, making the progression of ideas feel slightly disjointed in that specific section.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'export earnings', 'category', and 'percentage change' correctly. There are some minor inaccuracies in collocation and phrasing, such as 'At the fleeting glance' (which should be 'At a fleeting glance' or 'At a glance') and 'ratio of product values' (which is not the most precise term for export earnings). While you attempt to use varied vocabulary, the range is somewhat limited, and you rely on fairly standard descriptors. Incorporating more precise academic collocations would enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and your meaning is generally clear throughout the response. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'the highest value of export earnings was found in petroleum products at nearly 61 billion' (which should be 'for petroleum products') and the awkward phrasing in the third paragraph. Punctuation is generally accurate, but the sentence structure could be more varied to demonstrate higher control. Most errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the writing from reaching a higher level of fluency and precision.
