IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The comparison of the export income of one nation and product category change was demonstrated by the bar and table chart in 2015 and 2016 respectively.
Overall, it is clear that in both years, most of the earnings were received from petroleum products and engineered goods, while the maximum change of value was noticed in textiles and the least was in agricultural products.
In 2015, the income from petroleum products and engineered goods hovered between 50% and 60%, above 40% of the money was collected from gems and jewellery, and rest of the categories showed a difference of nearly 5%. However, after 10 years, the first two types were stood above 60% and earnings from agriculture products and textiles depicted the same percentage as near 30% each. Gems and jewellery was similar as the past.
Probing further, the value of textiles was increased by 15.24% and a negligible change was observed in case of agricultural product, whereas petroleum products and engineered goods were risen up by 3% or 8.5% correspondingly, only the gems and jewellery' value was decreased by 5.18%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the data, including a clear overview and specific comparisons. However, there are significant inaccuracies in data interpretation. For instance, the student claims that after '10 years' the values changed, whereas the data only covers 2015 and 2016. Furthermore, the description of the percentages in the text does not accurately reflect the provided chart (e.g., stating categories were 'above 60%' when the chart shows lower figures). While the main features are identified, the misinterpretation of the time frame and the data values limits the score. To improve, ensure that data points are read precisely and that the time context is correctly identified from the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is organized into logical paragraphs, moving from an introduction to an overview and then into specific details. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'However', and 'Probing further' are used to guide the reader. However, the progression of ideas is occasionally hindered by the inaccurate data reporting. The referencing is generally clear, but the transition between the general overview and the specific data points could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate for an IELTS Task 1 response, providing a clear structure that helps the reader follow the intended argument despite the factual errors.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, using terms like 'export income', 'product category', and 'negligible change'. There are some instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'the first two types were stood above 60%' and 'only the gems and jewellery' value was decreased'. These errors do not impede communication but show a lack of precision in word choice and collocation. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise academic collocations and ensure that verbs are used in the correct voice and tense when describing statistical trends.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'the first two types were stood' (passive voice error), 'the value of textiles was increased' (unnecessary passive), and 'whereas petroleum products and engineered goods were risen up' (incorrect verb form). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding the general meaning of the report. To improve, focus on the correct use of active versus passive voice for describing data and ensure subject-verb agreement is maintained throughout complex sentences.
