Student answer (Band 5.5)

The chart illustrates the figure of one country's exports in different categories between 2015 and 2016. The table presents the proportion change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.

Overall, it can be seen that earning in 2016 is larger than the 2015 for all the categories except the gems and jewellery.

The petroleum products and the engineered good earned almost 6.2 billions dollar in 2016, corresponding to it the petroleum exported in 2015 accounted for around 60 billions dollars whereas earning from the engineering goods is droped to approximatly 56 billions dollar. The gems and jewellery generated revenue of 42 billions dollar in 2015 and the little decrement was noted for year 2016, this was a considerable less sales made than the previous categories. Figures for the agricultural products and textile were the same at 31 billions dollar in 2016 while the profit generated by those categories was less in 2015 which is about 30 billions dollar and 26 billions dollar, respectively.

On the other hand, table clearly shows increments and decrements for the specific category with contrast to previous year of 2015. The petroleum products earning was increased by 3%, the engineering goods reached 8.5% while the minimum increase is recorded for the agricultural products at 0.81% and the dramatic growth is presented for the textiles which is about 15.24%. Whereas, the gems and jewellery was the only category that faced declined and droped to 5.18%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers all parts of the task by summarizing the main features of the chart and table. You have successfully identified the key trends, such as the growth in most categories and the decline in gems and jewellery. However, there are significant inaccuracies in data reporting. For example, you state that petroleum and engineering goods earned '6.2 billions dollar' in 2016, whereas the chart clearly shows figures closer to 60 billion. These data misinterpretations hinder the clarity of your report. To improve, ensure you carefully cross-reference the figures with the provided visual data to avoid factual errors that misrepresent the information provided.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs focusing on the chart and table respectively. You use some cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand' and 'whereas' to link ideas. However, the progression of ideas is sometimes mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'corresponding to it the petroleum exported in 2015 accounted for around 60 billions dollars'. Improving the flow between sentences and ensuring that cohesive devices are used to connect related data points more naturally would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'increment', 'decrement', and 'generated revenue'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'earning is larger than the 2015', 'little decrement was noted', and 'considerable less sales'. Additionally, there are minor spelling errors like 'droped' (dropped) and 'approximatly' (approximately). To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise academic collocations and ensure that your word forms are accurate in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Issues include subject-verb agreement ('earning... is larger'), incorrect preposition usage ('in contrast to' instead of 'with contrast to'), and article usage errors. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to affect the overall fluency of the response. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic grammatical consistency, particularly regarding verb tenses and the correct use of plural versus singular nouns when discussing financial figures.
