IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The chart compares different revenues generated from exports in a country in one year.

Overall, revenues generated from textile and engineered goods surged, while revenue from agricultural product remained almost the same in both years, but slight increase. Only gems and jewellery products experienced a deterioration in the amount of income being brought into the country.

In the year 2015, petroleum products brought in the highest income, followed closely by engineered goods. Textiles generated the smallest revenue but surged significantly in the subsequent year. In contrast, agricultural products generated at about 31% but only had a slight increase of about 0.81%. revenue from gems and jewellery decreased by 5.18% to a low level of 41%.

In 2016, revenues from textiles skyrocketed to over 30% that was an 15.24%, that is over 6% more increase than any other product in subsequent year. Revenue from engineered products also experienced an enormous rise at about 8.5%, Petroleum product only had 3%, unlike agricultural products that did not bring must money than what was seen in the previous year.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the main features and comparing the two years. You successfully highlighted the growth in textiles and engineered goods, as well as the decline in gems and jewellery. However, the report lacks precision in data reporting. For instance, stating that textiles 'skyrocketed to over 30%' is confusing when the chart likely refers to revenue values rather than percentages. Furthermore, the interpretation of the table data is occasionally inaccurate, such as the claim that agricultural products did not bring 'must money' (much money), which is a subjective interpretation rather than a factual report of the provided figures. To improve, ensure that data points are clearly linked to the correct categories and units.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. There is a clear progression of ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or imprecise. Phrases like 'in subsequent year' and 'that is an 15.24%' disrupt the flow and clarity of the sentences. While paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the specific data, the internal cohesion within paragraphs could be improved by using more varied linking words to connect the comparisons between 2015 and 2016 more smoothly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'surged', 'deterioration', and 'skyrocketed' to describe trends. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation that occasionally impede clarity. For example, 'did not bring must money' is grammatically incorrect and imprecise. Additionally, the phrasing 'amount of income being brought into the country' is somewhat wordy. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise terminology for data reporting, such as 'revenue figures' or 'percentage growth', and ensure that collocations are natural and accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the accuracy of the report. Examples include 'an 15.24%' (should be 'a 15.24%'), 'did not bring must money than' (should be 'did not bring as much money as'), and 'Petroleum product only had 3%' (missing a verb or preposition). While these errors do not completely prevent the reader from understanding the main points, they are frequent enough to limit the score. Increasing the number of error-free sentences through careful proofreading would significantly improve your score.
