IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar graph illustrates the different categories of exports and their earnings of a country, while the table shows the change in the proportion of exports for each product category in 2015 and 2016. Units are measured in billions of dollars.

Overall, there are 5 different categories: petroleum, engineered goods, gems and jewellery, agricultural products and Textiles. The major earnings were in petroleum products and engineered goods for both years, 2015 and 2016. The least export earnings were in textiles, especially in 2015.

In 2016, the revenue generated from exported goods increased in every product except gems and jewellery. Petroleum products raised over 2 billion dollars in one year, In contrast gems and jewellery declined by 2 billion dollars. Agricultural products raised only 1 biliion dollars but textiles generated over 5 billion dollars, which was a high profit compared to other products.

In the table, textiles made more than 15 percent increase in profit in one year, whereas gems and jewellery lost 5 percent of revenue.

Engineered goods and agricultural products raised 8.5 and 0.81 percent profit respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all parts of the task by summarizing the main features of both the bar chart and the table. You successfully identified the major trends, such as the dominance of petroleum and engineered goods, and highlighted the contrasting performance of gems and jewellery. However, the analysis is slightly hampered by some inaccuracies in data interpretation. For instance, stating that textiles generated over 5 billion dollars is a misreading of the chart, which shows the value in billions of dollars but does not support that specific figure for textiles. To reach a higher band, ensure that data points are transcribed with absolute precision and that comparisons are consistently supported by the provided figures.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group information by category and trend. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the general trends from the specific data points. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'whereas', and 'In the table' are used effectively to guide the reader through the comparisons. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions between sentences could be more sophisticated to improve the overall cohesion. The progression of ideas is clear, and the information is presented in a way that is easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Terms like 'revenue generated', 'product category', and 'proportion of exports' are used appropriately. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'raised' used in place of 'increased' or 'grew', and 'profit' used when the task refers to export value. These inaccuracies do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your report. To improve, focus on using more specific collocations related to data reporting, such as 'experienced a growth of' or 'saw a decline in'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While there are some grammatical errors, such as 'Petroleum products raised over 2 billion dollars' (where 'rose by' would be more accurate) and the comma splice in 'one year, In contrast', these errors do not cause confusion. You show good control over basic structures, and the meaning is always clear. To move into the higher bands, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as passive voice or subordinate clauses, and ensure that punctuation, particularly regarding sentence boundaries, is consistently accurate.
