Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two graphical representations below illustrate the value of a nation's exports in five groups since 2015 and 2016, as well as the percentage change in export earnings in 2016 compared with 2015.

Overall, the country traded internationally five main categories of goods, for instance petroleum products, engineered goods, gems and jewellery, agricultural products and textile. Among of these petroleum products and engineered goods were the leading source of export revenue in both years, while agriculture products and textiles contributed less to the total export earning.

In 2016, there was a noticeable decline in the value of gems and jewellery exports. This experienced a decrease of 5.18% falling from billion dollar in 2015 to just over billion in 2016.This was the only department that recorded a significant drop during the period.

In contrast, textile exports showed remarkable growth. The percentage change in value increased significantly to 15.24% in 2016 compared to 2015, making textiles the fastest growing export category, While, agricultural products recorded only a marginal increase of 0.81%, indicating minimal growth and making it the least improved sector within the given timeframe.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the data well, identifying the leading export categories and highlighting the significant trends for gems and textiles. However, the report is slightly incomplete as it fails to mention the specific values for the categories, merely stating 'billion dollar' without the actual figures provided in the chart. While the overview is clear, the analysis of the data could be more comprehensive by including more comparative figures between the two years. The response successfully identifies the key trends, but the lack of specific data points prevents it from reaching a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different trends. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'While', and 'Overall' are used to guide the reader. However, there are some minor issues with cohesion, such as the slightly awkward phrasing 'Among of these' and the fragmented sentence structure in the third paragraph ('falling from billion dollar...'). Despite these minor mechanical issues, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, with terms like 'graphical representations', 'export earnings', and 'marginal increase' used correctly. There are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'department' used to refer to an export category and the missing numerical values which makes the description vague. The vocabulary is generally sufficient to convey the intended meaning, but it lacks the precision and sophistication required for a higher band. The repetition of 'export' is noticeable, though it does not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While there are several error-free sentences, there are also noticeable grammatical errors, such as 'Among of these' (incorrect preposition) and 'falling from billion dollar' (missing article and numerical value). Punctuation is generally acceptable, though there is a capitalization error after a period ('2016.This'). These errors do not significantly impede communication, but they demonstrate a lack of full control over complex structures, placing the response firmly in the 6.0 band range.
