Student answer (Band 6.0)

The chart illustrates the value of a country's exports in various categories between 2015 and 2016 while the table represents the percentage change in a single category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.

Overall, on the x-axis we have product category and on the y-axis we can see export earnings in billions. The table shows the difference in percentages in two years that came from export earnings.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the data and provided relevant comparisons. You covered all categories and correctly contrasted the growth trends with the decline in gems and jewellery. However, the report lacks a clear, concise overview paragraph that synthesizes the most significant trends at the beginning. Additionally, the description of the data is sometimes slightly repetitive, and the reference to the x-axis and y-axis is unnecessary in an IELTS task; focus instead on the data trends themselves. To improve, ensure you highlight the most striking differences or similarities immediately after the introduction.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on specific categories. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'regarding' and 'in contrast', to link ideas. However, the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is a bit mechanical. Some sentences feel slightly disjointed, and the use of 'at last' is not the most natural way to introduce the final point. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would help the flow of the report, moving it toward a higher band.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly, using terms like 'generated', 'declined', and 'marginal increase'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in collocation and word choice, such as 'percentage difference increased to 8.5%' (it would be more precise to say 'the percentage change was 8.5%'). The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the sophistication or precision required for higher bands. Try to incorporate more varied ways to describe trends and fluctuations to demonstrate a wider lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'percentage difference increased to 8.5%' and 'in 2016, from engineering goods almost 61 billion dollars were generated'. The phrasing 'If we see, gems and jewellery' is also slightly awkward. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and more natural word order in complex sentences to improve your accuracy.
