Student answer (Band 7.5)

The bar graph illustrates the value of exports in various categories in one country between 2015 and 2016, whereas the table provides information about the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016, in comparison with 2015.

Overall, in 2016, export earnings were higher for all categories, with gems and jewellery being the only exception. However, the percentage increase was greater for textiles.

Petroleum products earned about $63 billion in 2016, an increase of 3% from the 2015 figure, which stood at approximately $61 billion. The earnings from engineered goods were around $57 billion in 2015, whereas they showed a significant rise in 2016, increasing by 8.5% to $62 billion. However, gems and jewellery showed a 5.18% decline, with earnings standing at around $43 billion and $41 billion in 2015 and 2016, respectively.

For agricultural products, earnings remained almost unchanged, increasing only slightly from around $61 billion in 2015 to $61.5 billion in 2016, while the percentage value experienced 0.81% increase. Meanwhile, the significant increase occurred in textiles' earnings and percentage value, standing at approximately $26 billion and $32 billion in 2015 and 2016, respectively, while the percentage value surged to 15.24%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview that highlights the main trends, such as the general increase in export earnings and the specific exception of gems and jewellery. The selection of data is appropriate, and you have successfully made comparisons between the two years. The key features, such as the significant growth in textiles and the decline in gems and jewellery, are clearly identified and supported by the provided figures. The response is well-structured and meets the requirements of an Academic Task 1 report by summarizing the information accurately without unnecessary repetition.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the overview and the detailed body paragraphs. Each paragraph has a clear central topic, and the information is sequenced effectively. Cohesive devices, such as 'whereas', 'however', and 'meanwhile', are used appropriately to link sentences and ideas. The paragraphing is logical and contributes to the overall clarity of the report. The flow of information is smooth, and the reader can easily follow the comparisons made between the different export categories across the two years.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases such as 'export earnings', 'significant rise', 'remained almost unchanged', and 'surged' demonstrate a good command of topic-specific language. The vocabulary is generally accurate and appropriate for an academic report. While the range is solid, incorporating a few more sophisticated collocations or varied synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease' could elevate the score further. There are no significant errors in word choice or spelling that impede communication, and the language used is natural and fits the context well.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response demonstrates a good variety of complex structures, such as the use of participial phrases ('increasing by 8.5%') and subordinate clauses ('whereas they showed a significant rise'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is generally strong. There are very occasional minor slips, such as the phrasing 'the significant increase occurred in textiles' earnings', which could be more naturally expressed as 'a significant increase was seen in textile earnings'. However, these do not detract from the overall clarity or the complexity of the grammatical range displayed throughout the text.
