The chart below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The given bar graph illustrates the data that dignifies an unnamed nation's exports in five most important categories between 2015 and 2016 respectively.

At a cursory glance, it is clearly seen that petroleum products show a steady increase to about 3 percent, whereas the textile industry shows about three times the increase as compared to the former-mentioned sector. Moreover, the engineering sector represents an allevation of about half the proportion to that of the clothing sector.

However, the one and only category that is diamonds and jewelry faced about a small proportion of hindrances in the year 2016. Whilst, the agricultural goods have remained almost stable in the provided data comparison.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the ability to fully develop the response. While you have identified some categories, the analysis is superficial and lacks the necessary detail to provide a comprehensive summary. You have not included specific data points from the chart or table, such as the actual values or the specific percentage changes, which are essential for a Task 1 response. To improve, ensure you select key features, provide supporting data for all categories mentioned, and write a more detailed overview that synthesizes the information rather than just listing categories.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organized into short paragraphs, which is a positive start. However, the logical progression is hindered by the lack of sufficient content. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Moreover' and 'Whilst', but they feel somewhat mechanical due to the brevity of the sentences. The referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly when comparing sectors without explicitly stating the data being compared. To improve, focus on creating a smoother flow between sentences by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, developed focus that connects back to the main trends in the data.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

There is an attempt to use a range of vocabulary, but some word choices are inaccurate or inappropriate for an academic report. For example, 'dignifies' is misused in this context, and 'allevation' is not the correct term for describing an increase or growth. The phrase 'one and only category' is too informal for an academic task. To improve, focus on using precise vocabulary related to data description, such as 'fluctuation', 'decline', 'significant', or 'marginal'. Avoid overly complex words if you are not certain of their exact meaning and context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity, such as 'the one and only category that is diamonds and jewelry faced about a small proportion of hindrances'. The use of 'respectively' at the end of the first sentence is redundant and grammatically misplaced. To improve, focus on sentence construction and ensure that your subjects and verbs agree. Practice using complex structures like relative clauses or passive voice correctly to describe data trends, and proofread carefully to eliminate basic errors in phrasing.
