Student answer (Band 5.5)

This pie chart illustrated the value of country's exports in various categories in 2015 and 2016 and tables shows the percentage change in values in 2015 and 2016. If we talk about petroleum products pie chart shows that exports increased in 2016 compared to 2015 and table prove that statement that petroleum products exports increased in 2016 by 3%.

While if we talk about Gems and Jewellery there was decline in exports by almost 5.18 %. One the other hand Engineered goods and Textiles shows a big hike in 2016 compared to 2015. As we can see in table exports of engineered products were increased by 8.5% and textile exports increased by 15.24 %.

There was not a big cgnge in exports of Agricultural products but still it showed positive sign it was increasing then before .

In conclusion i see that as a positive sign for country's economy that there exports were increasing then before but it would be better if they focus on exports of Gems and Jewellery and Agricultural products.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the data, but the analysis is somewhat superficial. While you mention specific categories like petroleum and textiles, the report lacks a clear overview or a summary of the most significant trends. The inclusion of personal commentary, such as 'If we talk about', is inappropriate for an academic report, which should remain objective. Furthermore, the response fails to clearly distinguish between the two data sources (the chart and the table), leading to some confusion in the presentation of the figures. To improve, focus on grouping data logically and providing a concise summary of the overall trends without using conversational fillers.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is quite mechanical and repetitive, particularly the phrase 'If we talk about', which is used twice to introduce points. The transition between sentences is often abrupt, and the lack of varied linking words makes the flow feel disjointed. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the conclusion is more of a personal opinion than a synthesis of the data provided. Using a wider range of linking phrases such as 'In contrast', 'Furthermore', or 'Conversely' would significantly improve the logical flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate to convey the basic meaning, but it lacks the precision required for an academic task. You rely on simple descriptors like 'big hike' and 'positive sign', which are informal. There are also some spelling errors, such as 'cgnge' instead of 'change'. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more precise terminology related to data description, such as 'significant increase', 'marginal decline', or 'fluctuation'. The range of vocabulary is limited, and the repetition of basic verbs like 'increased' and 'showed' hinders the sophistication of the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. For example, 'This pie chart illustrated' should be in the present tense ('illustrates'), and 'tables shows' contains a subject-verb agreement error. There are also issues with articles ('the country's economy') and punctuation. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors suggests a lack of control over complex structures. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage will help improve your accuracy significantly.
