Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all parts of the task well by reporting the main features of the exports in 2015 and 2016 while incorporating the percentage changes from the table. The student successfully identifies key details such as engineering and petroleum products accounting for the highest earnings and agriculture having the lowest. Overview points are included, noting that most categories experienced an increase except for gems and jewellery. Key figures and percentages are accurately cited and compared. The information is well-selected, presenting a clear summary without unnecessary detail. However, some minor inaccuracies in data reporting exist, such as stating petroleum and engineered goods were 'at around more than 58 billion'. Despite these minor flaws, the task is comprehensively addressed, matching the Band 7 requirements well.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is organized into four distinct paragraphs, maintaining a clear overall structure with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs detailing specific categories. Ideas are logically sequenced, starting with general trends before moving into specifics. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In contrast', and 'Although' are used to connect ideas, though some referencing and transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'exports' and 'change'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different categories and insights. While logical organisation and progression are clear throughout, minor issues with cohesive control prevent a higher score, placing this response firmly at Band 6.5 or 7.0. Given the clear progression and paragraphing, a Band 7 is appropriate.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and subject-specific terms such as 'earnings', 'proportion', 'considerable drop', and 'dramatical increase'. However, there are notable word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text. For instance, the student writes 'product categories exports earning' instead of 'export earnings of various product categories', 'proportion changes' instead of 'percentage changes', and 'dramatical increase' instead of 'dramatic increase'. Spelling errors like 'remaing' instead of 'remaining' and 'unchange' instead of 'unchanged' also appear. While communication is not impeded and the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the data, these recurring lexical slips restrict the score to Band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate structures like 'although textiles exports experienced...'. However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasing choices that persist throughout the essay. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('The pie chart compare' instead of 'compares', 'table provide' instead of 'provides'), incorrect verb forms ('experienced increased' instead of 'an increase', 'highest number of exporting' instead of 'highest export volumes', 'had not experienced a major changed'), and preposition errors. Although these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear, the frequency of grammatical inaccuracies prevents the response from reaching Band 6.5, making Band 6 an accurate descriptor.
