Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The student covers all parts of the prompt by presenting data for all five export categories across both years, including initial figures and the percentage changes. Main features such as the dominance of petroleum products and the significant increase in textiles are correctly identified and supported with figures (e.g., petroleum products starting at around 60 billion dollars and increasing by 3 percent). However, the response lacks a clear, overarching overview paragraph that summarises the main trends across the chart and table. Furthermore, some data points are slightly imprecise or incomplete, such as omitting the final percentage change figure for textiles. Because all parts of the task are addressed with relevant data despite minor omissions and the absence of a distinct overview, a Band 6.0 is appropriate.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement, with information about different categories grouped together across sentences. However, cohesion is often faulty or mechanical, and the paragraphing is very weak. The text is broken into isolated blocks without clear logical progression between them, and punctuation errors create run-on structures or fragmented reading. For instance, the opening paragraph fails to use a full stop or semicolon before launching into the list of exported products, leading to a run-on sentence. Cohesive devices are minimal, and referencing between sentences is occasionally unclear. While the reader can follow the general flow of information, the lack of sophisticated cohesive devices and poor paragraph structure limit the score to a Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items and specific industry terms such as 'petroleum products', 'engineered goods', and 'agricultural products'. There are also successful attempts at descriptive language, such as 'increased 3 percent', 'declined', and 'whooping 31 billion dollars'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'abvious' instead of 'obvious', 'happend' instead of 'happened', and 'upto' instead of 'up to'. Additionally, the phrase 'gem and jewellery' contains a slight singular/plural mismatch compared to the chart label. These lexical errors and limitations place the response firmly in the Band 6 range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting comparative and coordinate structures such as 'In 2015 the petroleum products export was valued... but in 2016 the value... increased'. However, control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are run-on sentences due to a lack of proper punctuation, missing commas, and missing prepositions (e.g., 'increase to whooping 31 billion dollars with estimated increase up to 15.24'). Punctuation is largely neglected, with sentences running together without full stops. Grammatical errors are frequent enough to cause occasional difficulty for the reader, though they do not completely impede communication. This corresponds to a Band 5.0.
