Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given bar graph and table illustrates the value of one country's exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016 , with further data about the percentage change in each category of exports between the given years.

To embark with, it is noticeable that the value of exports from 2016 are more than that of 2015 of the same category, with the exception of gems and jewellery. Meanwhile, every other category had various ranges of value increment with the highest being in textiles with a 15.24% rise, and the lowest being agricultural products with a minimal 0.81% increase. Meanwhile, petroleum products and engineered goods had an overwhelmingly high amount of value , in both 2015 and 2016, in comparision to other categories. Moreover, they recorded 60 billion and 55 billion dollars in value in 2015 respectively, whereas they grew to the same value in 2016 , with a high rise at around 60 billion dollars. On the contrary, agricultural products and textiles had the lowest value in 2015 with a measured 30 billion and 25 billion dollar worth respectively. However, textile industry grew at a rapid pace and equalized the worth of agricultural products in 2016 at a height of approximatley 30 billion dollars. Gems and jewelery, being the only degraded category in value dropped from 43 billion to 40 billion dollars in 2015 and 2016 respectively.

Overall, it becomes apparent that petroleum products and engineered goods topped the market in value whereas textiles and agriculutural products remained the bottom two of the bunch.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the export earnings in 2015 and 2016 alongside the percentage changes. A clear overview is provided at the beginning and reinforced at the end, noting the top-performing categories and the single declining one. Key data points are selected and compared, such as the highest rise in textiles and the drop in gems and jewellery. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and vague descriptions in the data reporting; for instance, the writer states that petroleum products and engineered goods recorded 60 billion and 55 billion dollars in 2015, which are slightly imprecise compared to the chart (61 and 57 billion), though well within acceptable tolerances. Overall, the task is covered thoroughly.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraph, and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices are used throughout to guide the reader, such as 'Meanwhile', 'On the contrary', and 'Moreover'. However, some cohesive phrases feel a bit unnatural or repetitive, particularly the overuse of 'Meanwhile' in close succession. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and there is a clear progression of ideas from general comparisons down to specific category details.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, attempting less common terms such as 'overwhelmingly high', 'minimal', 'equalized', and 'degraded'. There are some minor lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as calling gems and jewellery a 'degraded category' rather than 'declining', and spelling 'agriculutural' incorrectly. Despite these occasional errors, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating relative clauses and participial phrases (e.g., 'being the only degraded category'). There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'To embark with' instead of 'To begin with', and subject-verb agreement issues like 'The given bar graph and table illustrates'. Punctuation is generally fine, but some sentences are overly convoluted and contain minor structural flaws that require the reader to re-read slightly. However, these errors rarely impede overall communication.
