Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the export earnings in 2015 and 2016 and the percentage changes. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, correctly highlighting petroleum products as the highest valued export and textiles as showing a significant increase. Key data points are cited, such as petroleum rising from $60 billion to $62 billion with a 3% increase, and textiles seeing a 15.24% rise. However, there are minor inaccuracies in reading the exact figures from the chart (e.g. stating petroleum was $60 billion in 2015 when it was closer to $61 billion, and minor typos in dates such as 'between 2016 and 2016'). Despite these minor data discrepancies, the overall response covers the required information well and meets the criteria for Band 6.5 to 7.0, best reflected at Band 6.5 due to slight errors in data reporting.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay has a clear overall arrangement and follows a logical progression, starting with an introductory overview and moving through the categories systematically. Cohesive devices are used adequately to link ideas, such as 'Likewise', 'In contrast', and 'During the period of an year'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to structure the response, separating the introduction/overview from the body details. However, referencing and cohesion can occasionally feel somewhat mechanical or repetitive in sentence openings. Overall, the organization is coherent and easy to follow, aligning well with the Band 7 descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms related to data analysis such as 'export values', 'category', 'percentage changes', 'rise', and 'decline'. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary ('highest valued export category', 'significant increase'), but also noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'pertroleum', 'agricultral', and 'higest'. These lexical errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the score from reaching higher bands. The vocabulary is sufficient for Band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and comparative structures. There are several grammatical and mechanical errors throughout the text, such as 'export value of petroleum products were' (subject-verb agreement), 'in an year' (article usage), and 'whose export valued' (passive/active confusion). Despite these errors, meaning is generally clear and they rarely impede communication. This balance of complex structures and persistent errors fits comfortably within the Band 6 descriptor.
