Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student covers all parts of the task by reporting data from both the bar chart and the table. An overview is provided, highlighting the highest and lowest categories and general trends. However, there are some inaccuracies in reporting the data. For instance, the student states that petroleum products were higher in 2016 than 2015 by 'approximately 2 million', whereas the chart shows an increase from 61 to 63 billion dollars. Similarly, the phrasing regarding agricultural products being 'stabilized' is slightly imprecise given the slight increase of 0.81%. Despite these minor data discrepancies, the main features and comparisons are successfully identified and presented, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response is arranged into logical paragraphs, beginning with an introduction, followed by an overview, a body paragraph detailing the bar chart data, and a final paragraph addressing the table. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Overall', 'In 2016', and 'Turning to table', but referencing and linking can be somewhat mechanical and faulty at times (e.g., 'Turning to table' lacks a preposition, and 'While textiles expirenced lowest' is grammatically disjointed). Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, overview, and specific data details, ensuring an overall coherent arrangement that satisfies the criteria for Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student attempts a range of vocabulary suitable for a data task, utilizing terms such as 'proportional changes', 'upward trend', 'downward', and 'declined'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'petroieum', 'expirenced', 'levelled off', and awkward phrasing like 'highest index'. Additionally, 'billion' is omitted when discussing numerical values (e.g., 'around 2 million'). While the range of vocabulary is adequate to convey the core information, these frequent lexical and spelling inaccuracies restrict the score to Band 5.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response includes a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as introductory subordinate clauses ('Whereas table displays...'). However, grammatical control is inconsistent. There are missing articles ('one country's in different five categories', 'Turning to table'), preposition errors ('in both year'), and awkward passive constructions ('Engineered good had rose by 8.5%'). Punctuation and verb tense usage also contain minor flaws. These errors occur frequently throughout the text, although they rarely impede overall communication, placing the response firmly at Band 5.5.
