Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the chart and table, and makes relevant comparisons. The overview captures the key trends correctly, noting that textiles had the highest positive change while gems and jewellery declined, and petroleum products contributed the most in terms of overall export value. However, the response contains a notable data misinterpretation: in the final paragraph, the student states that petroleum exports were 'around 61% in 2015 and about 62% in 2016,' whereas the chart measures these values in billions of dollars ($61 billion and $62 billion), treating them as percentages. Furthermore, the response trails off abruptly at the end ('Whereas, agriculture and textile had the'), leaving the final sentence unfinished. These inaccuracies and the incomplete ending prevent the response from achieving a higher band score.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response is organised into introduction, overview, and body paragraphs, providing a logical framework for the data. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover,' 'Overall,' 'on the other hand,' and 'Whereas' are used to signal shifts between ideas and categories. However, paragraphing and logical progression are undermined by the abrupt truncation of the final sentence, which leaves ideas disconnected. Additionally, referencing and mechanical cohesion can occasionally feel repetitive or slightly strained when contrasting data points. Overall, the structure is coherent at a basic level, but the lack of completion at the end of the text pulls the score down.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for describing economic data and trends, incorporating terms such as 'sector,' 'proportional' (intended as proportion), 'positive change,' and 'trend.' There are, however, several lexical and spelling errors throughout the text, such as 'propotional' instead of proportion, 'acheived' instead of achieved, 'aprat' instead of apart, 'toped' instead of topped, and 'feild' instead of field. While these errors do not completely obscure the meaning, they are noticeable and reflect a limited level of precision and control over less common vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including comparative structures and dependent clauses. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are errors with prepositions and articles (e.g., 'export of specific country,' 'table below illustrates, the change'), spelling errors affecting word forms, and misuse of comparative forms (e.g., 'had received a profit' when referring to percentage growth). Most significantly, the response ends with an incomplete sentence fragment. While basic sentences are generally understandable, frequent errors and the broken final structure place this performance at Band 5.0.
