Student answer (Band 6.5)
The chart illustrates the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016 and the table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.
Overall, it is clear that export earnings increased for all the five categories except for gems and jewellery. Textiles experienced the largest growth, whereas petroleum remained the highest earning export in both the years.
In 2015, petroleum products generated $61 billion and rose to $63 billion in 2016 showing an increase of 3%. A similar pattern is seen for engineered goods which grew from $58 billion to $62 billion, representing growth of 8.5%. In contrast, earning generated by gems and jewellery declined by 5.18% from $42 billion to just $40 billion.
Agricultural products experienced a slight increase from $30 billion to $31 billion with an increase of just 0.81%. Furthermore, textiles recorded the largest growth at 15.24%, increasing earnings from $28 billion to $31 billion.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main features and making relevant comparisons across the categories. The overview correctly highlights the general growth trend alongside the exception for gems and jewellery, and identifies petroleum products as the highest earner. However, some data points are slightly inaccurate compared to the provided visual data, such as the 2015 figure for engineered goods and textiles. Key features are selected well, but greater precision in data reporting prevents the response from reaching a higher band. The ideas are relevant and generally well-supported, but minor discrepancies in figures mean the development is not fully consistent.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from an introductory summary to detailed body paragraphs. Information is structured adequately, beginning with an overview paragraph that sets the tone. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'In contrast' and 'Furthermore', to connect ideas between sentences and paragraphs. However, paragraphing and referencing can occasionally feel somewhat mechanical rather than entirely natural. While logical progression is maintained throughout, transitional links occasionally lack the seamless flexibility required for the next band level.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
An adequate range of vocabulary is used for the task, enabling the student to successfully describe trends, quantities, and changes. Words and phrases such as 'generated', 'declined', and 'growth' show an attempt to use functional academic language. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and slight approximations in the data description, but these do not impede communication. Less common lexical items are attempted, yet occasional slight stiffness in collocation keeps the vocabulary profile firmly at this level rather than achieving greater precision and natural stylistic flexibility.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The response displays a good variety of sentence structures, mixing simple and complex forms effectively. Sentences such as 'Textiles experienced the largest growth, whereas petroleum remained the highest earning export in both the years' demonstrate good control over complex clauses. There are frequent error-free sentences, and grammar and punctuation are handled with solid control throughout. Although a few minor slips persist, such as the unnecessary article in 'in both the years', they are rare and do not impede communication, reflecting a strong command of grammatical structures.
