Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially, earning a band five. The student attempts to report on the export data for 2015 and 2016, but the selection of information is limited and underdeveloped. For instance, the writer notes that petroleum products were 'around 6i1' in 2015 and '63' in 2016, but fails to provide a clear overview or effectively synthesize the broader trends across all categories. Furthermore, some data points are misread or awkwardly presented, such as claiming agricultural products 'look like same only minor low around 31 and 32'. To reach a higher level, the response would need to select key features more accurately, highlight meaningful comparisons between categories, and provide a clear, well-supported overview of the overall visual data.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The text demonstrates some organisation, but it lacks a clear overall progression. The writer attempts to divide the response into paragraphs and uses basic cohesive devices such as 'In this bar chart', 'Futhermore', and 'In conclution'. However, referencing is frequently unclear, and the mechanical repetition of sentence structures disrupts the flow. For example, moving from the bar chart to the table lacks smooth transitions. To improve coherence, the student should ensure that ideas are logically sequenced with more flexible and accurate cohesive devices, and that paragraphing is used to separate distinct trends, such as grouping the categories that increased versus those that decreased.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task, resulting in a band five. The student attempts some less common terms and data-related vocabulary, but this is marred by noticeable spelling errors and inappropriate word choices, such as 'catagories', 'dispaly', 'decress', 'futhermore' (spelled 'futhermore'), 'incresed', and 'conclution'. Additionally, phrases like 'totaly incresed' and 'tottaly different' demonstrate a restricted range of lexical control. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to incorporate a wider and more precise range of vocabulary related to data trends, while significantly improving spelling accuracy and avoiding repetitive phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
Grammatical control is weak, featuring a very limited range of structures and frequent errors that can cause difficulty for the reader. The response relies heavily on simple sentences with frequent basic errors in verb forms, tense consistency, and subject-verb agreement, such as 'This chart shows a amount', 'the petroleum products is around', and 'Another think is engineered goods is 58'. Attempts at complex structures are generally faulty, and punctuation is often neglected. To move up to the next band, the student must demonstrate a better mix of simple and complex sentence forms, reduce the frequency of basic grammatical errors, and ensure accurate use of articles, plurals, and verb tenses.
