Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting on both the chart and the table, selecting key features such as the overall upward trend, the highest change in textiles, and the decrease in gems and jewellery. However, the development is uneven. While some figures are provided correctly, such as the 15.24 percent increase for textiles, other details are under-developed or vague, such as referring to increases simply as 'about 2 to 3 billions' without consistently distinguishing between 2015 and 2016 values. To reach a higher band, the student should provide a clearer, more precise overview and ensure all major categories are compared more systematically with accurate data points from the visual.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement and attempts to link ideas using cohesive devices like 'however' and 'in addition'. Nevertheless, the paragraphing is extremely poor, as the entire response is compressed into just two massive blocks of text with no clear introduction or body paragraph division. Furthermore, referencing is at times mechanical, and run-on sentences disrupt the logical progression of information. To improve, the writer must use paragraphing appropriately to separate the overview from detailed body points, and ensure that cohesive devices are used more naturally to guide the reader smoothly through the data.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'category', 'percentage', and 'decrease'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary like 'engineered goods' and 'agricultural products', alongside numerical descriptors. However, noticeable word-choice and spelling errors are present throughout the text, such as 'gain's', 'lose' instead of loss, 'jewellry', and the repeated misspelling of 'Which' with a capital W. These lexical inaccuracies and spelling slips do not severely impede communication, but they restrict the score. To progress, the writer needs to expand their range of vocabulary for describing trends and improve accuracy in word forms and spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting relative clauses and participial structures. However, grammatical control is weak, with frequent errors in punctuation, capitalization, and sentence boundaries. The text relies heavily on comma splices and run-on structures connected by 'Wich', rather than correct punctuation and relative pronouns. There are also minor errors in subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'the paper shows two figures' and missing plural markers. These errors require some effort from the reader to parse, placing the grammar firmly at this level. To improve, the writer must focus on correct sentence boundary punctuation, avoiding run-on sentences, and mastering complex sentence subordination.
