Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart illustrates the value of countrys export across five different categories in 2015 and 2016, while the table shows the percentage change in each category. Overall, petroleum products had the highest export value, whereas textiles experienced the largest increase in value. Agriculture products, on the other hand, remain unchanged.

Petroleum products rose from $60 billion in 2015 to $62 billion in 2016, representing a 3% increase in the peoduct. Similarly, engineered goods increased from $57bn to $61bn, a rise of 8.5%. In contrast, gems and jewellery declined from $43 billion to $41 billion which was 5.18% decrease.

Agricultural products remained almost stable at $31bn with a small increase of o.81%. Meanwhile, textiles recorded the most significant growth, increasing from $25 billion in 2015 to $31 billion in 2016. Represented a 15.24% rise in the category, making textiles with the greatest percentage of growth among all five categories in exports.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by covering both the chart and the table, selecting and reporting key features and comparisons. An overview is successfully presented in the first paragraph, highlighting overall trends such as petroleum products having the highest value and textiles experiencing the largest increase. However, some aspects are under-developed or contain inaccuracies compared to the visual data. For instance, the student states that agricultural products 'remain unchanged', but the table and chart indicate a slight rise of 0.81% to 31.5 billion, and figures for 2015 petroleum products and engineered goods contain slight misreadings (stating 60 instead of 61, and 61 instead of 62). These minor lapses in data reporting keep the response at this level, as key features are outlined but not consistently accurate in detail.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response achieves a coherent overall arrangement with a clear structure that moves logically from an introduction and overview into body paragraphs detailing specific categories. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group related ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'while', 'Overall', 'whereas', and 'In contrast' are employed to connect ideas, though referencing and transitional links are occasionally a bit mechanical. The half-band higher is not fully reached because information progression and referencing within sentences could be smoother, and some cohesive links feel slightly repetitive or abrupt, preventing it from showing the more flexible integration characteristic of higher bands.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully attempting less common items and lexical phrases such as 'experienced the largest increase', 'significantly', and 'percentage of growth'. There are some word-choice and spelling errors that do not impede communication, such as 'countrys' instead of 'country's' and 'peoduct' instead of 'product', alongside minor inaccuracies in collocational phrasing like 'making textiles with the greatest percentage of growth'. The range is sufficient to convey the main features clearly, but noticeable inaccuracies in spelling and word formation prevent the response from achieving a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like relative clauses and comparative constructions effectively ('while the table shows', 'increasing from $25 billion...'). There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('making textiles with the greatest percentage') and a fragment sentence ('Represented a 15.24% rise'), but these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear. The control over grammar is typical of this level, featuring a solid foundation of error-free simple sentences alongside occasional lapses in complex clauses.
