Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response addresses the task only partially, as there are significant inaccuracies in reporting the data and misunderstandings of the source material. For instance, the student refers to the time frame as 'in 2 days' instead of comparing two different years, and misinterprets the units or values in several places, such as stating that petroleum rose to '64 billion dollars' or that gems and jewellerys were export 'decreased by 5.81 percent billion dollars'. While an overview or main trend is partially attempted through isolated descriptions, the lack of a clear overall summary and the presence of inaccurate figures prevent a fully developed response. To reach a higher level, the student must accurately extract and report the visual data without misreading the percentages or axes, and provide a clear, coherent overview of the main trends shown in the charts.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates some organization with basic paragraphing, separating the introduction from body paragraphs that discuss different product categories. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the logical flow is disrupted by imprecise referencing and awkward phrasing, such as starting paragraphs with 'Firstly' and 'Whereas' rather than logically connecting the data points. Cohesive devices are used somewhat mechanically and repetitively. For example, sentences frequently begin with 'There was...' or 'Lastly, there was...'. To improve, the student should ensure that ideas progress logically from one point to the next, using a wider variety of cohesive relationships naturally without relying on repetitive templates, and establish clearer links between the data categories and their corresponding changes.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common vocabulary related to the chart, such as 'illustrates', 'export', and 'percentage', but encounters noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word formation. Examples of these errors include spelling 'numerious' instead of 'numerous', writing 'percantage', and awkward collocations like 'gems and jewellerys were export'. These lexical inaccuracies cause some awkwardness for the reader, though communication is still generally maintained. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to expand their range of vocabulary, ensure correct word forms (such as nouns and verbs), and eliminate spelling mistakes while employing more precise terminology for describing statistical changes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response employs a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic past tense constructions. When complex structures are attempted, they frequently contain errors, such as in the sentence 'the exports was increased by 15.24% in 2016 that makes it to the value of approximately $35 billions', which features subject-verb agreement issues ('exports was') and awkward relative clause integration. Frequent errors in prepositions, verb forms, and articles persist throughout the text, such as 'change of percentage' instead of 'percentage change' and 'in 2 days'. To progress, the student must practice constructing a greater variety of complex sentences with accurate grammatical control, paying closer attention to subject-verb agreement, tense consistency, and correct prepositional usage.
