Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response falls well short of the 150-word minimum, containing only 71 words (with 11 words copied directly from the prompt uncounted). This severe under-length means the task is only responded to minimally. While the student attempts an overview by identifying petroleum products as the highest and textiles as the lowest, key features and specific data comparisons from the charts are largely omitted. To move up, the response must fully meet the word count requirement and present a well-developed overview with accurate data selected from both the bar chart and the table.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response attempts to organise information with introductory and overview statements, but the overall structure is fragmented due to the extremely short length. Cohesive devices are basic and repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'while' and 'whereas'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the paragraphs are overly brief and lack internal progression. To improve coherence and cohesion, the writer should use a wider variety of cohesive devices more naturally and develop distinct body paragraphs that logically group and compare the data from the visual sources.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
Vocabulary is basic and repetitive, with frequent lexical and word form errors that hinder communication, such as 'change presentage' instead of 'percentage change' and 'incresed' instead of 'increased'. The range of vocabulary is limited to simple terms like 'figure', 'highest proportion', and 'lowest figure'. To achieve a higher band score, the writer needs to expand their lexical repertoire to include less common vocabulary related to data analysis and ensure correct word forms and spelling throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical structures used are very limited, consisting mostly of simple and attempted complex sentences that contain frequent errors. There are noticeable issues with subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'value which country’s exports' and 'the figure of petroleum products were represented'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing capital letters at the beginning of sentences. To progress, the student must demonstrate a wider range of grammatical structures with greater accuracy, particularly regarding verb forms and clause formation.
