Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given bar chart illustrates the comparision of various categories exporting products in one country in 2015 and 2016.

Overall, it is clearly seen that petroleum products and engineering goods were most exporting products among the other types of products in both years. However, gems and jewellery, agricultural products, and textiles were export less in the following years.

In the initial year, petroleum products earned around 61 $ billions, and the exporting ratio was slightly increased in the following year. While engineering goods earned approximately 56 $ billions in 2015, but after a year it rose upto 61 $ billions. In addition to, gems and jewellery products earned around 40 $ billions in 2015. In contrast, the ratio of earning of gems and jewellery was slightly decreased in the final year.

Furthermore, agricultural products earned almost 30 $ billion in initital year and it shows minimal change in the earing in the following year. Lastly, the very least earning category was textiles, which earned around 25 $ billions in 2015. Nevertheless, the ratio of earning doubled in 2016.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the export values for 2015 and 2016 alongside the percentage changes. An overview is successfully attempted, identifying that petroleum products and engineering goods generated the highest earnings. However, the development of ideas is uneven; some key categories are only partially described or contain slight inaccuracies. For instance, the claim that gems and jewellery, agricultural products, and textiles were 'export less' in the following years contradicts the data for agricultural products and textiles, which both increased. While the main trends are highlighted, greater precision in reporting the specific figures and trends would elevate the performance further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear structure that includes an introduction, an overview paragraph, and detailed body paragraphs. Information and ideas are generally presented in a logical sequence. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty, seen in transitions like 'In addition to' and awkward referencing such as 'the following years' when discussing static year-on-year comparisons. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different categories of data, and the progression of ideas is mostly clear, though stronger cohesive devices are needed to fully earn a higher band.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate main trends and figures. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary and phraseology, such as 'comparision' and 'earning category', but these are accompanied by noticeable word choice, collocation, and word form errors. For example, phrases like 'most exporting products', 'export less', and 'the ratio of earning doubled' show limitations in lexical precision and collocation. Spelling is generally accurate, but inaccuracies in word forms (e.g., 'initital', 'earing') prevent the response from achieving a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating clauses with 'while', 'in contrast', and 'nevertheless'. However, control over grammar is inconsistent. There are several errors in grammar and sentence structure, such as missing articles, preposition misuse ('in initital year'), and awkward passive or active verb choices (e.g., 'were export less'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while the errors are noticeable, they rarely impede communication, positioning the writing comfortably within this category.
